The North Carolina National Guard's history in Graham, North Carolina goes back to the early 1800s. The unit was first organized as a Militia regiment in 1792 and fought in the American Revolution. In 1815, the National Guard helped suppress a slave rebellion in South Carolina. From 1821-1836, the guard served under Governor John Randolph as part of his Reconstruction efforts. In 1938, the NGG was reorganized into a brigade and grew to over 30,000 soldiers. The brigade participated in World War II and returned home in 1946. Since then, the brigade has been mobilized on numerous occasions including response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Florence in 2018.

Graham is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Graham was founded in 1821 by John Stewart Graham and remained a small community until it became an incorporated town in 1907. In 1920, Graham joined the National Association of Townships as one of its original towns. On December 6, 1930, Graham became one of two towns to be merged into the new city of Asheville after it was created from portions of Johnston and Lenoir Counties. The post- merge growth led to the incorporation of Graham as an official town on September 1, 1932. The first settler in Graham was John StewartGraham who arrived with his family from Scotland in 1821. He built a log cabin on what is now known as Old Berry Street near present day Main Street and named it "Graham." By 1830, he had developed a large cotton plantation which he named "Newbern." After years of hard work and great success at Newbern, JohnStewartGraham passed away in 1853 leaving behind him many children and grandchildren who continued to operate the farmstead until 1888 when it went into foreclosure due to lack of support from their father's estate taxes. When new laws were enacted affecting incorporations within counties during Reconstruction that removed certain powers from county governments this caused much consternation among local people who felt they would lose their rights without any recourse should their county decline for lack of representation or wealth than could be found elsewhere within the state or country. Many residents decided to move away from Durham or Raleigh during this time period because those communities were not supportive enough for them despite having similar demographics (eastern white working class). In 1907, following passage by the General Assembly Of North Carolina Of A Resolution Declaring That Towns And Rural Paysdales Be Given The Right To Incorporate And Have Their Own Constitution; Mr./Mrs./Gentleman John S Taylor Requested That This Resolution Be Sent To His Alma Mater For Approval; The Resolution Was Approved And On February 3rd 1907 Town Hall Was Completed leasing Office space From Mrs/Mrs Downey Which Led To Continued Growth Intown & Outtown Would Like To Thank Her For Her Contributions
Graham was founded in 1719 by George Graham, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after General George Graham and his wife Deborah. The first store in the town was opened in 1734. In 1836, the town had a population of 1,000 people and it became an incorporated village in 1851. In 1865, the town had a population of 3,500 people and it became an independent city on December 12, 1865. On May 11th, 1870, Graham was destroyed by a severe tornado that left more than 100 dead or missing.
