Graham, North Carolina is a small town in the southeastern United States. It is located in Graham County, near the border of Orange County and one of two counties that make up the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Graham was founded in 1839 by John Pemberton and his family. The first post office was established in 1841. At the time, it was called Pembertonville because its founder lived there. Graham’s economy changed after railroads arrived in the area in the 1860s and 1870s. Railroads gave Graham access to new markets and jobs brought people into town from out of town. This increased economic growth led to three mayorships for Graham during its history: Elijah Dukes (1881-1887), Wm Harnett (1907-1913), and John Sugg (1920-1923). The Pemberton family left Graham in 1885 when they were forced out of their home by landowner Elisha Daniel Smith Jr., Sr.. They moved to nearby High Point until they bought back their property on which they built a plantation house known as “The Oaks” on October 1, 1889. After years of fruit production, Daniel sold The Oaks to his son Elisha Daniel Smith III in 1902 for $1 million dollars ($100 million adjusted today). In 1907, negotiations began for a highway connecting Charlotte with Raleigh through Graham County; this road became known as I-85 or Highway No 4A. In 1923, Elisha Daniel Smith IV died without leaving an heir so his estate divided among his five children: Wm Harnett became sole owner of The Oaks; Addie married Harold Laughlin; Clifford married Nellie Maynard; and Virgie married George Cagle before she died childless within two years of her marriage in 1951. The City Council voted 9-2 on February 10, 1952 not to annex part of High Point because residents there had been protesting against it for years without achieving any success
Graham was founded in 1771 by Colonel James Graham. The town became a county seat in 1834 and was named for General James Graham, the first governor of North Carolina. In 1865, it was renamed Charlotte after Queen Charlotte of Great Britain.
