This year marks its 50th anniversary, and it continues to be an important part of our military community.
Graham, North Carolina is a small town in the southern region of the United States. It is located on the eastern border of Johnston County and is bordered by Gaston County to the north, Cherokee County to the east, and Henderson County to the south. The population was 923 at the 2010 census. Graham was founded in 1811 as a trading post on Catawba Creek by General James Robertson and his company of soldiers during what is now known as Reconstruction period in America. In 1825, it became an incorporated city under a charter from North Carolina legislature. In 1945, Graham was established as a military airbase for World War II bombing operations over Japan. In 1957, Graham became home to first Baptist church in Johnston County when Methodists left for unknown reasons. The present day First Baptist Church building was built between 1951 and 1955 using funds contributed by local farmers and businesses. On November 25, 1971, Hurricane Floyd hit Graham while it was still under construction on Catawba Lake causing great damage throughout town including loss of homes and businesses; however no fatalities occurred as a result of the storm. The current mayor of Graham is Darrell Blythe with office starting January 1st 2020
Graham was founded in 1795 by Judge John Graham, a Revolutionary War veteran and landowner. The town became an important center for trade and commerce during the 19th century. In 1858, Graham was the site of the first annual Raleigh Cotton Festival, which attracted many prominent American cotton merchants and farmers to the city. The festival continued until 1969.
