Gastonia, North Carolina is a city in Gastonia County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 43,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gastonia County. The city is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. The name Gastonia comes from an Englishman who settled there in 1814 and named it after his home town of Great Britain. He had been brought up in nearby Salisbury and was familiar with both England and North Carolina through visits to those states since he had been living in London for some time before that. In 1819, John Hance moved to what is now Gaston County and named it for him as well; however, Hance's land lay beyond the jurisdiction of either Gastonia or Winston-Salem so both places continue to call themselves "Gastonia." The first permanent settler arrived around 1821 when General James Gist founded Gist Station on what is now Piedmont Avenue just outside of downtown Gastonville. By 1830, about 60 families were residing in what became known as Gastonville proper with about 300 residents total within two miles (3 km) of each other on three sides of a square mile (1 km2). That same year saw another early pioneer arrive when Ebenezer Fenton established a store on Five Forks Road northwest of downtown which would become one of town's most important thoroughfares later on. Gastonville grew rapidly during the 1840s due to new transportation innovations such as railroads that made goods available faster than ever before across much of Northern America.
