Gastonia, North Carolina is a small town located in Gastonia County, North Carolina. The population of Gastonia was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The racial makeup of Gastonia is 98% white. The history of Gaston County begins with the arrival of white settlers in 1819. By 1830, there were over 100 white families living in what is now Gaston County. Most of these settlers came from Virginia and Maryland and were looking for a chance to settle down and find new land where they could grow crops and raise livestock. As the years passed, more and more people moved into Gaston County until by 1880 it had reached its present size of 1,868 residents. In that year, the county seat was placed at Market Street in downtown Gastonia after trustees voted to move the courthouse from rural Stokesville to make way for a new library and court complex that would be built on State Highway 9A. Gastonia has been through many changes since its founding – most notably during World War II when it became one of the largest American cities occupied by troops fighting in Europe. After the war ended, many businesses closed their doors due to lack of business opportunities or because OFS (the Office of Foreign Assets Control) made it difficult for them to do business with countries like China and Cuba because those countries were still under communist rule at that time. However, thanks to some enterprising citizens who worked hard outside the government-controlled economy, gastoniare turned their city into an economic powerhouse during those difficult times. In 1838, slaves led by Captain James Longstreet attacked and burned down their master's plantation in Gastonia. The white militias that responded to the uprising were successful in suppressing the revolt, but they also killed many African Americans as they searched for slaves who had not yet revolted.
