The North Carolina Air National Guard has a rich history of deploying gifts to members and friends in the Gastonia area. TheGuard's 3rd Bomb Wing is responsible for maintaining air defense over the state, and their gift history reflects that responsibility. The Wing was founded on November 16, 1941 as the First Bomber Command of the United States Army Air Forces. It was redesignated as the Third Bomb Wing on October 1, 1947. The wing flew Boeing B-29 Superfortresses from Winston-Salem/Fayetteville Municipal Airport until September 1955 when it moved to Asheville Municipal Airport. In 1957, the Third Bomb Wing became part of Tactical Air Command (TAC). In 1969, TAC was combined with United States European Command (USEC) under NATO umbrella and became known as Allied Forces Europe (AFFE). From then through its disbanding in 1991, AAFE operated USAF aircraft at RAF Lakenheath in England and RAF Warton in Scotland. Some Of TheWing's Most Famous Gifts Include: 1) The Wright brothers' first aircraft – an experimental pusher bomber named "Patriots" which they flew from Dayton Ohio to Asheville NC on May 12th 1928; 2) The first jet fighter – General Electric F-86 Sabres flown by wingsmen Maxwell Anderson and Ed White at MacDill AFB Fla.; 3) The Garrett JB-4 Blimp – donated by Consolidated Aircraft Corporation; 4) An American Airlines Boeing 727 cargo plane - delivered on October 25th 1967 to Raleigh/Chapel Hill Regional Airport in Chapel Hill for use by UNC students; 5) A Beechcraft KingAir 350 Helicopter - donated by Charlotte Airways Incorporated; 6) A McDonnell Douglas DC-9 Airliner - delivered to Myrtle Beach AFB SC on January 9th 1990 for use by AFE commandos stationed at Fort Campbell KY during Operation Desert Storm; 7) A Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules -- donated by Aviation Week magazine editor Jack Goodspeed; 8) Two Embraer EMB 220 Bandeirantes -- donated by Brazilian airline Companhia de Aviação Brasileira S/A (Brazilian Airlines); 9) A Hughes H125H Stratofortress -- presented as a gift from US president Dwight Eisenhower in 1959 during his visit to Gastonia; 10) A Lockheed Littoral Combat Ship-- gifted one day after Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Wilmington NC killing more than 60 people

The USAAF has partnered with Spanish aerospace manufacturer Aerospatiale to deliver three new E-3A airborne early warning (AWACS) satellites into orbit. This gift is not only a sign of friendship, but also demonstrates America’s commitment to NATO member Spain through its relationship with Aerospatiale. The E-3A will provide real-time situational awareness for allied forces on land and in the air, providing commanders with crucial information that can save lives. These satellites are a major contribution to USFK’s goal of ensuring continued interoperability between coalition partners abroad and preserving our security at home.
The North Carolina Air National Guard deployed a gift history in Gastonia, North Carolina on December 12, 2017. The unit was deploying to support the Christmas party of the 159th Airlift Wing at Robins Air Force Base. The 159th Airlift Wing is a service members organization that provides lift and ferry flights for military installations and civilians in southernNorth Carolina. The wing mobilized to support Hurricane Florence as it made its way through the state. They flew supplies and equipment to various military bases across the state before returning home on Dec 12th.
Gastonia, North Carolina is a city located in Gastonia County, North Carolina. The population was 20,521 at the 2010 census. Gastonia is the only municipality in Gaston County and it is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The history of Gastonia begins with three men - Dr. William J. Brown and Drs. John Seddon and Isaac Roy - who founded a dispensary on Meeting Street in 1872. The city's name comes from George Clinton Gaston, 3rd Baron de la Warr's Expedition which visited the area in 1828-29 and found rich natural resources including coal and silver mines.The discovery of these resources led to increased development in Gastonia as a commercial center for the surrounding counties as well as new incorporations of townships within Gaston County until 1870 when business districts were created along Interstate 95 (I-95) making it easier for people to reach downtowns such as Raleigh and Greensboro by car or train.In 1925, Gastonia became one of the first cities in South Carolina to ratify the State Constitution creating an elected mayor/council system with five members instead of four appointed by county commissioners Today, Gastonia continues its tradition of being an active community with many cultural events throughout the year including art displays at local galleries, music concerts at local restaurants & bars, family fun days at nearby parks like Garland Park Zoo & Pee Wee Herman Recreation Center.,Mardi Gras festivities which culminate with a parade through downtown on Mardi Gras day – February 2nd – followed by New Year's Eve party at Riverside Park
The USAF deployed gift history in 1957. The origins of the USAF Deployed Gift History Program can be traced back to the Korean War when the USAF activated a program called the Airlift Command to provide humanitarian aid and support to United Nations Forces. This program was later renamed Airlift Command- Pacific Fleet and eventually became known as Air Force Deployed Gift History (AFDGH). During World War II, AFDGH was used for a variety of purposes including providing food, clothing, medical supplies and other essential items to Allied Forces waging war overseas. In 1948, AFDGH evolved into the Aero Commander Project which aimed to develop an expendable airlift system capable of carrying goods and passengers anywhere in the world. In 1951, Aero Commander began operations with Boeing 747 transports flying cargo from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to RAF Mildenhall in England. From then on, Aero Commander became one of the primary delivery systems for US military forces worldwide. In 1957, Aeronautical Systems Division at Wright Patterson AFB created a gift history program that would be known as AFDGH. The rationale behind this new initiative was twofold: firstly, it could help identify aircraft that were being used frequently or recycled by different service branches; secondly it could provide valuable anecdotal information about how USAF members had treated their brethren during wartime or subsequently contributed to American culture through donations or cultural displays. Through AFDGH, service members from all branches of the military can share their personal Memories of War with fellow servicemen and women around the world who will never forget what they experienced during America’s most significant conflict since World War II! On Dec. 12, 1941, the United States Air Force Deployed a Specialized Gift Certificate Program to commemorate the Presidential Unit Citation awarded to Lieutenant Colonel James H. Patton for his heroism in action against the Japanese Empire. The gift program was initiated by then-Secretary of War Henry Stimson and was later passed on to General George C Marshall as Commanderin Chief of All American Forces in Europe during World War II.
Gastonnia was founded in 1827 by three men, George Stephenson, James W. Gaston and John H. White. The community soon developed into a major slave market for the region. In 1828, Gastonia became the first town in North Carolina to pass an ordinance against slavery. The ordinance was repealed in 1830 after a public outcry from Confederate supporters. In 1865, Gastonia joined the Confederacy and was burned by Union troops during the Battle of Charlotte. No one was killed in Gastonia but many buildings were destroyed and most of the population fled or were forced to leave their homes. In 1865, Gastonia became the seat of government for Forsyth County which encompassed much of central North Carolina. The county government remained until 1970 when it was abolished entirely and merged with Person County to form new Dare County. The city of Gastonburg is located near downtown Gastonnia and has been home to many businesses such as Coca-Cola Bottling Company (1893), Eastern Pipe Layers (1909), United Dairymen's Association (1924) and Golden Corral Grill & Saloon (1988). The city also includes several museums including the Faulkner Museum of African American Art (1985), CabellRoberts House Museum (1991) and Greensboro Gateway History Museum(1992).
The Gastonia area was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The region became a part of the British colonies of North Carolina in 1809. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, ending the American Civil War. Gastonia became an all-black town after the war. Gastonia is home to many notable historical figures, including Congressional Medal of Honor recipient James Corbett and author Tuskegee Airmen leader John Dye.
