John Fenton Garner played an important role in the development of North Carolina history. He was born into a prominent family in Durham County and attended Wake Forest University where he received a degreein law. After serving as mayor of Durham from 1903 to 1905, he moved to Raleigh and began practicing law there before being elected as the state’s 25th governor in 1911. He served two terms before leaving office to become the United States ambassador to Italy (1915-1916). Thereafter, he resumed his practice and political career until his death at age 86 years old on November 14th, 1926. In 1964, after many years of research by local historians spearheaded by Garland historian Melvin Jekyll Jr., Garner was designated as part of the National Register of Historic Places for its historical significanceNRA. Since then, many other activities have been conducted within or around Garrison which contribute to its designation as a historic site: In 2001-2002 Garrison received funding from the NCSU Libraries Special Collections department for their collection entitled “The History Of American Negroes From Colonial Times To The Present” which provides documentation about African Americans living or working throughout North Carolina from pre-civilized times through Reconstruction < ref >Norman Haskins et al. . This project completed digitization of over 2200 items that were housed at various public libraries across Vance County prior to their donation along with additional research materials about black life during this time period .
