The Douglas DC-3 operated by both the RAF (and later American Airlines) during World War II was also a popular transport choice for air forces around the world. Many classic designs from this era such as the Boeing 747 were produced under license by other airlines or entered into production as conversions of existing airport terminals designations like "Conversions" or "Airports."

Garner, North Carolina is a town in Dare County, North Carolina. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Garner has been known as the "Queen of the Mountains" since before it was incorporated as a town. Garner was founded by General James Harnett on March 12, 1819. It was named for him and his brother John Garner who had come to the area from Virginia in 1786. From 1824-1829, Garner served as postmaster of Monticello and from 1830-1835 as justice of the peace. For many years until 1865, Garner housed court sessions in the old courthouse which is now used as a elementary school. In 1865, after much discussion and deliberation by its citizens, Garner became an incorporated town under the name of "Garner." The first store in what is now Garner opened on October 28th of that year. The first post office was established on November 3rd of that year and operated until January 1st of 1915 when it changed its name to "Dare Post Office". The current post office building was built in 1922 and is located on Hwy 158 just east of downtown Garner. In 1937, Clarence Waddell donated land along State Route 158 between Caldwellsville and Rocksville for a new high school which would eventually become known as UNC Asheville High School (now Appalachian Community College). With money raised through various events such as dances held at Waddell's home each year until 1959 when construction began on what would be known as Harnett High School beganruction ended in 1958 when classes moved into their present building which overlooks Interstate 40 outside of town limits
Garner was founded in 1798 by James Garner, a planter and slaveowner. It became an important tobacco town after the 1800s, with cooperatives and other businesses growing up around it. In 1915, Garner's cotton plantations were sold to the United States government for $8 million. The town continued to grow through the 1920s and 1930s as a result of its key role in the U.S. cotton market. However, during World War II Garner was hit hard by the war-related damage done to North Carolina's textile industry; its population declined from over 100,000 in 1940 to just under 50,000 by 1945. After the war ended, however, many people returned to Garner and its growth resumed. In recent years, Garner has become a center for art and culture in the eastern part of North Carolina.
