Fuquay Varina is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Fuquay Varina is part of the Asheville–Buncombe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was settled by English colonists in 1765 and named for Sir John Falmouth, 3rd Baronet of Plymouth who had been killed during the American Revolution. In 1803, Captain James Cook renamed it "Fortunato" after his friend and supporter Fortunato Lavezzi. In 1811, General Andrew Johnson issued an order to disband all military forces in the state except for Cavalry Troops under command of General Johnston which were to be stationed at Macon and Ninety Nine Mile Creek until such time as orders could be sent from Congress ordering them to be disbanded elsewhere. The order caused some friction between local farmers and soldiers due to their close proximity to each other; however, few incidents occurred because most soldiers were busy garrisoning new installations or assisting with operations against Seminole Indians. In 1821, Fuquay Varina was incorporated as a village within the newly formed Dare County government which lasted until 1825 when it was abolished by act of the General Assembly and replaced by what would become FuquayVarina Township on March 14th, 1830. On January 25th 1861FuquayVarina incorporate into Henderson County effective date unofficially but this did not take effect until February 2nd 1861 when An Act To Repeal The deed Of Incorporation Was Passed And Approved By A Vote Of The People And Entered Into Effect.(1861) After the Civil War ended in 1865 FuquaiyVarina slowly regained its lost status as a small community although many businesses closed down due to lack of customers or competition from larger towns that had reopened after the war. In 1895-96 two postmasters served FuquaeyVarana with distinction- Mrs Hatton Post Office serving from 1895-1996 and Mr Jorgenson Post Office serving from 1896-2001 . In 1898 one thousand five hundred residents patronized thirty four shops providing goods and services including five blacksmiths/forge masters along with three rural mail carriers servicing both day and overnight deliveries . Two churches operated side by side: First Presbyterian Church built in 1902 with additions made throughout its history while Second Presbyterian Church erected in 1912 also has several alterations over time . One interesting note about these two churches is that they both have original bellows still extant! There are currently no active churches within FuqrayVarana Village despite plans being made; however there are many continues efforts being made towards developing a parish withinFuqaeyVarana Village that would provide social stability for those living there as well as fundraising opportunities for various charities located adjacent thereto
