In 2007, another small batch coffee shop called “Thirsty Monk”opened in Fayetteville. This store served a variety of different types of roasted beans and made their own espresso drinks as well as hot chocolate and other items. The growth of trade within Southwestern North Carolina during this period helped contribute to increased economic development in Fayetteville over time; by 1860, its population surpassed 100,000.[1][2] In 1870s– 1880s, African Americans began migrating from throughout central Georgia into northeast Alabama through Cumberland Gap which formed when severe weather damage closed Route 8 across Cherokee National Forest creating a gap in the Appalachian Mountains between Tennessee and Alabama (the Cumberland Gap has since been reopened). This migration led to significant improvements in educational opportunities for black Americans living north of Interstate 20; Fayetteville's white school system only opened its doors starting in 1912.[3] In 1901 negroes became citizens with full rights under North Carolinian law[4] The cotton industry played an important role early on in helping fuel American success during World War II; production peaked at $5 billion dollars annualized during World War II,[5][6] but has since declined due largely to plant closings and technological advances[7]. However much remains visible from old mills sites throughout downtown including Fairview Cotton Mill Complex which operated from 1865 until 1984[8], Knox Mills Historic District [9], Mount Carmel Baptist Church [10], First Presbyterian Church [11], Masonic Temple No 2 ( built 1892)[12], Browne’s Drug Store [13], Coca Cola Bottling Plant #1 ( built 1913)[14],[15]and many more examples highlighting how local economies have supported urban areas across America evergreen crops like tobacco while also providing employment opportunities for locals
