Coffee beans were brought overland by early pioneers and sold at the local farmers' markets. By 1810, coffee was being roasted on small farms near Fayetteville. In 1816, the first large-scale coffee roast took place in what is now the downtown area of Fayetteville. This event was attended by dignitaries and attracted much attention due to its importance in the developing town. In 1827, a group of businessmen founded the Fayetteville Coffee Company and began to roast their own coffee. By 1830, most of what is now downtown Fayetteville had been built and business had begun to grow rapidly around this new industry. Due to its location and history, Fortieth Street became known as "the heart of coffee country." The success of the city's coffee Roasters led to other businesses starting up throughout the 19th century: grocery stores, banks, breweries, carriages etcetera. As more people started moving into cities during this time period, it became harder for small towns like Fayetteville to keep up with these larger businesses. Fayetteville's nickname, "The City of Destiny", comes from its location on the banks of the Nance River, which forms the eastern border of what was once Cherokee Nation territory. The first Europeans to arrive in present-day Fayetteville were Dutch settlers who established a trading post there in 1664. They named their settlement New Amsterdam because it lay near what later became Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1729, Governor James Tryon founded Charlotte as the new capital of North Carolina after his victory over King George II at Yorktown during the American Revolution. Fayetteville was incorporated as a town on December 12, 1802 by Order of Gov. James Kenedy. It became an independent city on February 14, 1825 following an act approved by General Richard Henderson that granted voting rights to towns over twenty thousand people within two years of incorporation without having to apply for or receive state approval twice; this unusual provision helped make Fayetteville one of the most rapidly growing cities in America during the late 19th century and into the 20th century. During World War I (1914–18), Fayetteville served as Camp Meigs (later Camp Sherman) on Antietam Creek where more than 2700 men from various U.S., Allied and German forces died in battle between October 15 and November 7 1914 . The Battle Monument can still be seen today just east of Interstate 85 exit 234 off Hwy 700 outside Blythewood, NC
