The United States Navy Deployed Gift History began in 1942 when the Coastal Defense Command (CDC) was created. CDC was responsible for coastal defense and for the confiscation of smuggled goods. The first gift given by the USN to a civilian organization was an American Legion field kit. In 1946, the command responsibility for navy deployed gifts were transferred from CDC to Naval Base Norfolk. There, the command control center was established and it became possible to send gifts directly from naval base Norfolk to military installations around the country. This gave rise to what is now known as “Navy dispatched gift history” because all navy gifts are sent directly from naval base Norfolk to their destination, whether that be Marine Corps Station Camp Lejeune or USS Coral Sea (LHD-7). One of the most famous examples of navy dispatched gift history is Secretary of Defense George H.W. Bush presenting his wife Barbara with a $2 million yacht, which she used during her term as First Lady of America. Another memorable example occurred in 1992 when then-Captain Bob Hope presented his then-wife Betty Buckley with a $5 million Rolex watch on board USS Enterprise (CVN 75). The town was founded in 1743 by Colonel Hugh Lawson who named it for his wife Eleanor Howe Lawson. In 1913, First Lady Woodrow Wilson moved into her presidential White House here while she recovered from surgery; however due to budgetary constraints President Wilson’s second term was completed without her presence. On September 23rd – 25th 1944 World War II veteran Admiral Chester Nimitz delivered a presentation on Naval Warfare at Elizabeth City High School which helped spur development of naval warfare during World War II
On October 15th 1976 local resident Jane Addams organized a protest against racial segregation at American Tobacco Company headquarters with about 150 citizens participating.
In early 2007 new Mayor Lamar Smith announced plans for a mixed use development called 'The Triangle'. This project would have included office space along with housing units overlooking downtown square mile.

Elizabeth City was founded in 1718 by Captain John Smith and his men who were looking for a new home after leaving Carolina. The town site was chosen because it was high enough to provide an arduous climb up the mountain, but not so high that it would block the view of the English navy from developing the area. Elizabeth City quickly grew into a small town with close to 2,000 residents. The town's first chief magistrate, James Robertson, served for many years before he died in 1762. He had been appointed by Governor Tryon as one of four commissioners who would oversee the development of the new colony. Elizabeth City experienced its most significant growth during the American Revolution. In 1775, when General George Washington arrived at Elizabeth City to take command of America's war effort against Great Britain, he found himself surrounded by enemy forces and no way to escape. To make matters worse, British forces had burned down much of his original settlement on Roanoke Island which also contained some of America's early tobacco plantations. Washington decided that Elizabeth City must be defended if America were ever to win her war against Great Britain. He ordered his troops to march through Elizabeth City on their way back to North Carolina; this event is known as "The March on Raleigh." This action helped solidify Elizabeth City's status as a major military and trading post during America's Revolutionary War period. After independence was declared in 1776, Elizabeth City became part of newly formed North Carolina and continued to grow rapidly until 1813 when it lost its charter due to financial problems brought about by increased population density and economic instability caused by laissez faire policies implemented by Governor Tryon IX (the last colonial governor). After that point, ElizabethCity dwindled in size until it finally closed its doors in 1827 following a fire that destroyed much of its infrastructure including stores and homes. Today only a few remnant pieces remain from what once was an important community located just north of Charlotte County within today’s city limits
