In 1802, the United States military detachment known as the 1st Infantry Regiment was quartered in Elizabeth City. This detachment was part of General Andrew Jackson’s Expedition against Mexico and was made up of soldiers from all over the country. During their time in town, the regiment purchased a large quantity of munitions and supplies. One of these purchases was a cannon called “The Star-Spangled Banner” which they brought back to Elizabeth City with them. The cannon is now on display at Camp David National Monument. In 1804, Colonel Thomas Maney organized a company of riflemen from Virginia under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Enoch Pratt. He moved these men down to Elizabeth City to help defend against an attack by Spanish forces led by Brigadier General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The Spaniards were met with heavy resistance and only managed to capture two guns and a few hundred rounds of ammunition before being driven off. After this victory, Pratt became colonel of the 2nd Regiment East Tennessee Volunteers and moved his unit north into Canada where they fought in several engagements against British forces during the War for Independence. In 1814, Captain James Foard organized a company out of South Carolina volunteers under the command of Major John Coker. They arrived in Elizabeth City late in that year after fighting their way through Indian Country towards Mobile Bayou where they expected to find refuge from Union troops encamped there (this never happened). Foard's company spent most of their time guarding river crossings near Fort Fisher but also participated in several skirmishes and raids against Union forces along Mobile Bayou (these efforts ultimately failed). In 1815, Captain Foard's unit moved westward towards Texas where they helped repel an attempted invasion by Mexican troops under Governor Mariano Ibarra y Costilla (the Texas campaign is sometimes referred to as "The Battle at San Jacinto"). After this successful defense, Captain Foard was given commandof one battalion within Confederate Forces later named The 8th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment based at Chattanooga, Tennessee (this battalion participated in many battles including First Bull Run). Aftermath: Many soldiers who served during The American Civil War received their wounds or death while deployed overseas – some permanently! At home life may have been calm until such events rocked America; however friends far away were suddenly pulled into its violence & chaos….

United States casualties during this operation were upwards of 255 Marines dead, 749 wounded, and 515 missing in action (MIA).
