Elizabeth City is a city in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,383 at the 2010 census. Elizabeth City is the county seat of Durham County. It was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1784 as Elizabeth Town and named for First Lady of America, Elizabeth Kildare. The city has been a center for education and business since its incorporation as a town in 1784. The first school opened in 1785 and it was the only one until 1827 when another school was built on what is now Tryon Street. In 1861, the state legislature designated Elizabeth City as the county seat of Durham County after Carteret Island became part of Raleigh during the American Civil War. In 1865, an oil well was drilled off of Elizabeth City's eastern edge and production began shortly thereafter; this led to rapid growth inElizabeth City and other areas around this wellhead. By 1930, oil production had ceased but many heavy industry remained including shipyards (the largest being P&O Shipbuilding), aircraft manufacturing (the largest being William Bader Aircraft), distilleries (the second largest being New Bern Distillery) and paper mills (the thirdlargest being Wm Hite Paper Company). These days much smaller businesses continue to operate such as restaurants or small medical clinics that have thrived due to their proximity to popular tourist destinations like Duke University and downtown Raleigh

As Korea unfolded itself into a full-blown conflict that saw American ships sunk or damaged by North Korean torpedo boats, Coast Guardsmen were called upon once again – this time providing security at ports throughout Korea while Navy ships manned facilities ashore. Elizabeth City was founded in 1735, and it quickly became one of the most important settlements in North Carolina. The city was named after Princess Elizabeth, who died in a plane crash while on her way to visit the colony. In 1814, Queen Charlotte granted Elizabeth City its own charter, which helped make it an even more important center of commerce and culture.Elizabeth City also played host to several important military engagements during the American Revolution. In 1775, Battle of Saratoga took place here when General George Washington fought against British forces; in 1781, the Battle of Camden occurred when Patriot forces fought against British troops; and finally, in 1785, Battle of Yorktown took place here when General Cornwallis defeated Federal forces.After the Revolutionary War ended, Elizabeth City experienced some growth and prosperity. In 1800, it had a population of over 10,000 people; by 1810, this had increased to over 20,000 people. Despite this increase in population size however,Elizabeth City remained largely uneventful until 1828 when a large fire destroyed much of the town center. This fire caused many damage and losses to businesses and property throughout the city; however, it also produced some very valuable new development. By 1830-1831 alone (the first year that census records were kept),Elizabeth City had a population of 25-30 thousand people – twice as much as what it would have been two decades later without the fire! Aftermathofthe fire led to an overall increasein population density within Elizabeth City – from 2/3rds of a million people in 1830 to almost 3/4ths by 1840!During these years there were also significant changes taking place within Elizabeth City society: prostitution began becoming more popular among women than men; political correctness began becoming more prominent among both men and women; race tensions boiled over into violence occasionally;and educationally-apleased families moved outwards into richer neighborhoods outside of town.In 1840-1841 (the last year for which census data are available), Elizabeth City's population reached nearly 70000 people – double what it had been just two years earlier!The growth rates seen during these years continue through most of the 19th century though episodic declines beginning around World War I before returningto their original levels by World War II.ElizabethCity experienced some major declines during World War II including a near total lossof its residents due to conflict with American involvement overseas; however its economy still managed to stay afloat thanks primarilyto post-war reconstruction efforts; and most recently has seen significant revitalization spearheadedby local developers
