The history of the United States Army gift shop began in 1865, when three soldiers from Elizabeth City, North Carolina enlisted as messengers to Santa Anna in Mexico. Upon their return, they brought with them a shipment of gifts from America. The first Army gift shop was located on Market Street in Elizabeth City and opened its doors to the public on December 12th. From then until 1918, the store was operated by Lieutenant Colonel John A. Rankin who was also responsible for developing and maintaining the Soldier's Exchange program which gave discounts to military members on civilian items. In 1922, the store moved to its current location at 1101 Patton Boulevard and continued operation until it closed in 1978 due to budget cuts within the U.S. Army. Today, Army Gift Shop is one of only a few remaining businesses that continues to serve as an integral part of soldier's lives and culture within the United States Military. The store stocks a wide variety of gifts for both personal and commemorative use, as well as accessories such as medals and insignia. Gifts can be purchased online or over phone or in person at either store location; there are even special events each year coinciding with Veterans Day (November 8th) which add an extra layer of excitement to our shopping experience!

The United States Army Garrison in Elizabeth City, North Carolina was established in 1795 and is one of the oldest military installations in the country. The garrison barracks were built between 1796 and 1800 and are considered to be among the finest examples of Federal architecture. The garrison also housed a hospital from 1801 until it was closed in 1828. In 1865, the Union army burned down the garrison barracks, but they were rebuilt within a few years and remain an important part of the city's history today.
Elizabeth City, North Carolina is a city in the state of North Carolina, located on the banks of the Elizabeth River. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg–Wilmington metropolitan area and is one of the most populous cities in North Carolina. The city was founded by English colonists in 1729 as an agricultural community on Pee Dee Island. After many years of growth and development, Elizabeth City became a consolidated city ordinance on February 15, 1871. The original boundaries were 4 blocks wide by 2 blocks long with a total population of 1022. On May 1, 1907, Elizabeth City annexed what was then Jackson County. On December 12, 1896, during Reconstruction in America following the end of slavery, Elizabeth City ratified an ordinance creating African American schools within its borders (the first such law passed in any U.S. city). In 1938 it became one of only four U.S.-based cities to ratify the Equal Housing Act Amendments (the others being Montgomery and San Francisco). In recent years there has been much discussion around redevelopment opportunities for the downtown area and adjacent areas near Interstate 95/I-20 as well as new developments being proposed for other parts of town including: The Graham Center for Health Sciences; The Park Plaza; Anheuser Busch Brewery -Core Brewing Company ; Phillips 66 -Phillips 66 Research Center; First Baptist Church -First Baptist Church United Methodist Church; Presbyterian Church (UCC) -Jehovah's Witnesses Chapel.; Eberhardt Elementary School which serves students from pre-Kindergarten through third grade along with additional classrooms for special needs students located on opposite sides of I-95 just eastbound off exit 20A from I-95 Boulevard south to US 11th Street Bridge toll plaza; Walmart Supercenter across from Johnson Ford High School which opened in 2001 and provides local employment opportunities for residents who are not employed outside their home

Elizabeth City is one of the eight municipalities in York County and is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem metropolitan area. The town was founded on December 12, 1795 by Colonel James Moore and his wife Elizabeth Carr as an outpost on Roanoke Island to support British troops garrisoned there during the American Revolution. After the war ended in 1783, Moore's settlement grew rapidly thanks to its location on a seashore that became a major shipping point for goods reaching Wilmington and Raleigh from South Carolina and Georgia. In 1819, Elizabeth City became known as "the Hub of the World" due to its status as both a commercial center for timber production and as a staging ground for transportation across North Carolina's inland mountains to markets in Charleston and Savannah. During Reconstruction following the Civil War, Elizabeth City became one of the most influential black communities in America due to its close ties with white leaders such as John Fayette Carver and Thomas Marshall King Sr.. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans leftElizabeth City for new opportunities in other parts of North Carolina or outside America altogether. For much of this time period, Elizabeth City was also one of only two black towns within York County; other towns were Petersburg (established in 1878) and Salisbury (established in 1907). In 1755, the British made a landing on what is now Elizabeth City. They named it " Charlotte" after Queen Charlotte of England. The town was first settled by white people in the early 1800s and became a major center for slave trade. In 1848, Elizabeth City was renamed to honor General Ulysses S. Grant, who had helped free the slaves in the area. The city has been ruled by different powers throughout its history, but it has always been an important stop on the Underground Railroad.
