Gourmet coffee began as a small business in Eden, North Carolina in the early 1900s. The first gourmet coffee shop was established by two brothers, Harry and Frank, in 1912. Gourmet coffee became a well-known and respected brand throughout the Southeast United States. In the 1940s, Harry & Frank's sons, Dick and Donny, opened their own gourmet coffee shop in nearby Greensboro. Gourmet Coffee continued to grow and develop throughout the years, becoming one of the most popular and prestigious brands in America.
Eden is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Eden is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Eden" comes from the Garden of Eden story in the Bible. Eden is located on Pigeon Forge Road about halfway between Chapel Hill and Durham. The first settlers to what would become Eden were a group of men and women who migrated from Virginia in 1814, after purchasing land east of Hillsborough River. They built cabins on an upland plateau that overlooked the confluence of Mockingbird Creek and Pigeon Forge Lake. The first post office was established in 1816, serving as the nucleus around which more permanent settler communities developed over time. Today, only one building remains standing in downtown Eden- a three-story white clapboard schoolhouse dating back to 1852 which has been renovated several times and now serves as a museum containing artifacts from both before and after Eden's incorporation into Durham County as Pioneer Place Regional Park.: The early growth of Newtonville (later Dundee) and other villages west of Pigeon Forge Lake were due to two factors: easy access to water resources through Huntingdon River Valley below Pigeon Forge Lake (which included large tracts lying within present-day Chapel Hill) and hunting opportunities for white settlers along Mockingbird Creek., In 1840, when surveyors arrived at what would become known as “Newtonville” they noted that there was already an excellent community consisting mostly of Loyalists who had fled during hostilities between England and America.; However their surveys did not lead them astray when they found another cluster of log homes just northwest of Newtonville with good fishing potential.– This became known as “Eden” because it was thought by some that this location might be similar to Garden of Eden or some such biblical account….; By 1865 much transportation had been added making it possible for people to go anywhere they wanted including parts unknown prior thereto…..Today most everyone near Pigeon Forge knows something about those early days where pioneers walked hand-in-hand with horses carrying supplies upcountry

The population of Eden peaked at 2,500 in 1910 but has dwindled to around 1,000 today. Eden is home to the Eden Folklore Museum and the local library. The town also boast several notable landmarks, such as the John Witherspoon House which was built in 1892 and is considered one of the most important historical landmarks in Eden. The first European to sight the area was Captain John Smith in 1608. The area became part of North Carolina in 1729, when it was added to the newly created colony of Virginia. In 1819, North Carolina became a state after being granted by the United States Congress. The state boundaries were redrawn in 1830, and Eden included portions of what is now Asheboro and Chapel Hill. In 1840, Eden incorporated as a town and soon had a population over 100 residents. In 1874, Eden's school district merged with two other districts to form the present-day NC School District #2.
