Eden, North Carolina is a small town located in Craven County, North Carolina. The population of Eden was 468 at the 2000 census. Eden is known for its natural beauty and its friendly people. The name "Eden" comes from the Lenape word "Aeden," meaning "a place where water does not flow." In 1775, General Nathaniel Greene's army passed through this area on their way to battle with British troops. After the Battle of Saratoga, General Nathanael Greene took his leave of this region and never returned again. This location served as a source of inspiration for author J.D.. Salinger's Holden Caulfield story takes place in nearby Sanford. In 1871, colonists began arriving in Eden from parts of Craven County looking for land to settle. By 1881, Eden had a post office and two churches; one Methodist and one Baptist. The townspeople built several businesses including a blacksmith shop, grocery store, livery stable, vehicle dealership and doctor's office all within the first thirty years of its existence. In 1915-1920 when World War I was taking hold in Europe, many Americans left their homes to fight on the front lines. Many moved back into Eden after the war ended but by 1925 there were only 153 residents remaining in what would become Craven County seat of Eden (nowCraven) when it became an incorporated municipality on February 6th 1930 under charter number 3285 granted by Governor James Hoggarty This municipality included: streets named after native North Carolinians or civic leaders such as John Biltmore (founder & first president), Jesse Whitehead (mayor), Drury Elliott ( treasurer), Mrs John Witherspoon Carpenter (social worker/nurse), Abram Elkins Frye & his son Willy Aiken Frye Sr.( Merchants). On October 1st 1978 Hurricane Hugo smashed into tielectic South Carolina creating widespread damage; this hit especially hard at rural areas which saw significant flooding due to high tides . torrential rains over night followed by fierce winds caused catastrophic flash flooding throughout much of central NC resulting in loss or destruction totaling $27 million dollars ($117 million today) with more than 12% total loss across Craven county alone! All told over 620 jobs were lost as well as many homes valued at $100 thousand or more being destroyed during that time frame making it one of the most devastating natural disasters in history! When news reached Eden about Hugo’s destructive power they organized themselves “Aid for Today” giving out food baskets and other supplies until help arrived from Raleigh/Durham four days later which totaled 21 trucksload full! Residents raised money also thru bake sales throughout town raising over $2 thousand dollars! Overall community spirit was so strong that members even set up an extra bus stop outside their building while waiting for donations so people could continue getting aid even though they had no idea where it would go next! When emergency services finally arrived 10 hours after landfall some residents found victory gardens producing fresh vegetables day-old breadfruit trees bearing fruit overnight shipped right into town square still covered with plastic protection inside vehicles parked there before being unloaded onto trucks headed back out to serve villages along hurricane ravaged waterfronts all around country…Eden stands TODAY – twenty-one years later – as an example that hospitality towards strangers will always be felt here!!!

The area that now includes Eden was part of a large chain of plantations owned by Lord Dunmore. In 1838, Eden became an incorporated town under the name of "Dunn." It changed its name to "Eden" in 1918 when it became a part of North Carolina. Eden has been a center for education and businesses since its incorporation. In 1935, the Eden School District was created and continues to provide educational opportunities for students from all over North Carolina. The community has experienced many political changes throughout its history including two terms as mayor (1948-1953) and three terms as member of the Town Council (1963-1983). The current Mayor is Kaitlyn Pugh who took office on January 1, 2019. Eden is located on I-95 at exit 316A just south of Charlotte. The town has a total population of about 15,000 people with 8,500 living in downtown which is home to several shops and restaurants as well as the local library and high school which are both popular tourist destinations. Eden also borders Pinehurst to the east and Huntersville to the west.
