The North Carolina Air National Guard (NC ANG) flies more than 4,000 missions a year in support of the United States national security interests. The unit's primary mission is the air defense of North Carolina, with subordinate missions including airlift, logistics and command and control. In 1944, the NC ANG was activated as an aerial bombardment force to defend the state against Japanese attack. In 1946, it became an operational fighter wing and flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft that were among the first jets to enter service in the US military. The wing participated in conflicts in Korea and Vietnam before transitioning to F-15 Eagle fighters in 1991. The UNC ANG's 120th Fighter Wing is responsible for making aerial threats against potential adversaries throughout North Carolina; providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; conducting strike operations; supporting coastal guard duties; escorting Airlift Command personnel on long range flights; providing service at various military installations around the state; and conducting community outreach initiatives such as anti-drug patrols.

Manufacturing employment accounts for about 60% of all jobs in Eden while agriculture employs about 30%. The primary industry that produces goods for export is food processing but other products exported include textiles, plastics, metals and engineering products. In recent years there have been efforts by local businesses to develop new economic sectors such as research & development or tourism based on their location within minutes' walk of any major university or shopping district

Eden was a small community located in what is now Eden, North Carolina. The town was founded in 1798 by settlers from Virginia. The first post office was established in 1806. Eden had a population of about 100 people in 1811. In 1814, the town was renamed Mount Eden after the nearby mountain. In 1820, the population grew to 200 people and the name was changed again to Edenburg. By 1830, the population had grown to 350 people and they moved to a new location on High Street in 1840. The town ceased to exist around 1850 when it became part of Greenville County.
