Through many hard times—a fire that destroyed much of downtown Durham in 1911; World War II; Hurricane Floyd; economic collapse during the Great Recession—Durham has bounced back more than any other large city in America over these past 25 years or so. Durham, North Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the county seat of Durham County. The population was 161,828 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in the state after Raleigh. It is also one of the few American cities that has both a downtown area and an inner ring neighborhood built around its central business district. The first English settlers in what would become Durham were men from Sussex who founded a trading post on part of present-day Duke Street in 1692. In 1715, General James Moore moved his army across Indian Territory to attack rebellion by one of his Cherokee allies, but he was unsuccessful and returned home without engaging the Indians. By 1725, European traders had reached what is now Durham with posts at Millstream and Tryon Streets; this community became known as "New Durham." In 1802, when Wake County was created from portions of Union and Johnston counties, Durham became part of Wake County along with Raleigh and other surrounding townships. The first courthouse in town was built on Tryon Street in 1807; by 1830 it had grown to include four buildings on Broad Street within its walls. In 1829, through Act No. 638 entitled An act for erecting public squares throughout this State (1), Wake County acquired all land east of High Point Road including what is now downtown Durham – thus becoming one largecity for which there had never been any prior designation as such! This growth did not stop with physical expansion: New housing developments began proliferating rapidly throughout downtown during this time period - some still standing today – while businesses closed their doors or relocated to larger quarters throughout what would become "the Triangle". During this time period too many people were coming into town for work rather than living here permanently like they had done before; therefore much limited transportation options existed for those looking to live here permanently outside of traveling outwards from Raleigh or Charlotte either via truck or bus (and even then only if you could afford it!). This wouldn't be an issue anymore though – thanks to Interstate 95! The late 1800s through early 1900s saw a big increase in jobs available due to technological advances; however due to World War I economic conditions changed radically which led directly into World War II: industries went offshoring as factories closed down all over America due largely to high taxes levied by Congress on profits earned abroad as well as import tariffs put into place pursuant thereto (amongst others). As such many companies fled America altogether leaving huge piles of equipment & machinery overseas where it sat until finally being sold back onto American soil during the 1970s amidst Reaganomics when prices reverted back up again (& likewise job creation) once more! Today's Downtown core sees an influx of young professionals & their families who commute weekly/monthly out-of-town for work reasons but keep their homes here rent free given thatWalkableDowntown does have express buses running right past it 😃😃
