Dunn is a small town located in Rutherford County, North Carolina. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. Dunn is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Dunn comes from Andrew Dunn who settled there in 1772. In 1859, John Witherspoon appointed James Fenton as the first postmaster and built a log cabin on the site of present-day Dunn. From 1865 to 1870, Dunn was part of Henderson County and then Rutherford County. In 1871, it became a part of Union County when that county was created from parts of Henderson and Rutherford Counties. On January 15, 1888, Dunn incorporated as a town under the name "Dunn." The first mayor was J.M. McNeely and the first treasurer was J A Henson The town experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to marine bases in Wilmington and Cary. After the war ended, however, unemployment began to increase and development slowed down significantly until the early 1990s when a new oil refinery arrived in nearby Chapel Hill and led to an increase in economic activity for both towns. In March 2009, Mayor Mary Jane Sellers announced that she would not seek reelection due to health concerns but plans on remaining active politically through her organization Our Town Durham which promotes community engagement within Durham City Limits
Dunn was founded in 1792 by the Rev. Dr. Hugh Dunn, a Presbyterian minister and missionary to the area. The town grew rapidly after it was designated as a stop on the first Transylvania Road, which connected Charlotte, North Carolina, and Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1827, Dunn became a part of Gaston County when it was created from parts of Cumberland and Tyrrell counties. In 1881, Dunn merged with neighboring Pineville to form the town of Dunn-Pineville. In 1908, an act of the General Assembly changed Gaston County's name to Alamance County in honor of then-Governor Thomas Fenton Randolph. An important event in Dunn's history is its induction into the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
