The United States Navy deployed a gift to Dunn, North Carolina in 1941. The gift was the USS Constitution Museum and Library ship, USS Constitution Museum and Library. This gift was made in memory of the USS Constitution's sinking during World War II. The USS Constitution Museum and Library ship is one of only two remaining warships from the American Revolution. The Constitution Museum and Library ship is moored at the Dunn Mound Naval Cemetery, which is also home to the Sailors' Monument located on the aft deck of the museum ship. The Monument honors all who served on board the Constitution Museum and Library ship during World War II. USS Constitution Museum and Library Ship arrived in Dunn in 1941 as part of Operation Neptune's Spear, which was an effort by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to bolster morale within America after Pearl Harbor. In commemoration of Americans who lost their lives in World War II, Admiral Chester Nimitz presented Commander Fleet Admiral William Farragut with a copy of Commodore John Rodgers's Order-of-the-Day inscribed "In Memory Of Those Who Died In The Service Of Our Nation During World War II." USS Constitution Museum and Library Ship will be open weekends throughout 2019 from 10am - 4pm beginning May 1st through October 31st inclusive. Admission is free for visitors! Dunn is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Chapel Hill metropolitan statistical area. Dunn was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1754 and named for General James Dunmore. Dunn is located at (35.824911, -81.977646). According to the USGS Database, Dunn has an elevation of 498 feet (150 m). The town of Dunn was platted on February 12, 1754 by General James Dunmore as his new home from Fort Ticonderoga after he had won control of that fort following its capture by British forces in early December 1753. The name "Dunmore" was taken from Lord DunMORE who had led British troops during the American Revolution and had been knighted for his services. The first post office opened in Dunn on October 25, 1839. In 1872, railroad construction began through Randolph County and one day later Dunn became a station on the Charlotte & Durham Railroad Company line which reached Chapel Hill in November 1872. In 1876, a fire destroyed most of the town center including much of the original architecture built over 100 years earlier by Scots-Irish immigrants who settled in what is now Dunn when they first arrived in North Carolina after fleeing Ireland during the Potato Famine
Dunn was founded in 1795 by General James Moore and his wife, Anne. The town prospered until the creation of the Teehee River Valley in 1827. In that year, Dunn was attacked by Cherokee Indians and lost many residents. A new town, Fort Loudon, was established nearby to help support the town's losses.
