Dunn is a small town in North Carolina, located about 25 miles northeast of Raleigh. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. Dunn is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now includes Dunn was first settled by Native Americans in the early eighteenth century. The first European to visit Dunn was Captain John Smith in 1729, and he named it "Newbern." In 1785, surveyors from North Carolina laid out a plan for what is now Dunn on land that had been granted to Colonel James Dobbs by King George III of England. At this time, most of what is now Dunn was within present-day Durham County. In 1837, settlers arrived from Georgia and founded Chapel Hill; as Chapel Hill grew they began to demand more access to the water supplies available in nearby Durham County so they could Construct their homes without having to share with others. In 1873, an act was passed which allowed for the annexation of new counties into Durham County; as a result, parts of current-day Dunn were annexed into Chapel Hill proper while other areas became part of Orangeburg County and Rockingham County. In 1907, local farmers formed the Henderson Cotton Mill Company to produce cottonseed oil; due to this activity and mill conditions being too bad for other crops (due to lack of moisture), hay production quickly became dominant in how Dunn functioned commercially until World War II when dairying took over as primary production sector due mainly because there were no suitable markets for agricultural products outside North Carolina during wartime times due to shortages caused by allied bombing campaigns throughout Europe). The town was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the early 1800s, and has experienced growth and contraction over the years. In 1860, when the American Civil War began, Dunn sided with the Confederacy and proactively participated in hostilities. After the war ended, however, most of its residents abandoned Reconstructionism and welcomed new opportunities. By 1960, Dunn had reached a peak of population (around 2,500) but declined rapidly due to both economic decline and migration from other parts of the United States. In 2001, however, demographic trends changed again when a group of Dutch farmers moved into the town and founded a agricultural cooperative that remains an important part of local life today. Dunn is located at 33° 47′ 09″ N – 81° 58′ 59″ W (33.960913 / -81.715389). The town was named for John Prentice Dunn who settled there around 1819. At first it consisted only of a scattering of logs on some low ground near what is now downtown; later settlers built larger log cabins along Duck Creek or on highgrounds overlooking it. The first post office was established in 1825; it closed in 1865 because postal service was withdrawn from Durham during the Reconstruction Period after Confederate troops burned Durham Post Office building in April 1865 as revenge for Union raids into southern counties prior to that date. A store opened on Main Street near present day First Baptist Church in 1830; this building still stands today within walking distance of most businesses in town although no longer used for retail purposes. Dunn’s modest beginnings were short-lived though: within five years thereof all but one cabin had been constructed and by 1835 almost everyone living therein had set up their homes permanently or remained temporarily until they could afford to build anew nearer Duck Creek or elsewhere closer to marketable resources such as lumber or agriculture potentials.
