Dunn is a town in the United States located in Swain County. The population was 5,713 at the 2010 census. Dunn is home to North Carolina State University and two golf courses; one on the campus of NC State and one in Rocky Mount. The first permanent settler in what would become Dunn were two Cherokee Indians, brothers named George and Jesse Dunn, who came overland from Georgia in 1814. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Neuse River and started trading with other Native Americans. In 1827, they married Anna Maria Smith, daughter of Reverend John Smith of Raleigh. With their new family living near Raleigh, they began to cultivate land around their cabin for crops and livestock. By 1830, they had four children: James (James), Anna (Annie), John (John) and Sarah Jane (Sarah). In 1831-32 McConnell bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of land from Jesse Dunn for $10 per acre ($640/km²). This area would eventually become South Park which today forms part of Dunn's downtown core. McConnell also donated an amount of land northeast of his original purchase to support agricultural development including a millrace that became known as "the Mall." Moses Whitehurst purchased 607 acres (240 hectares) southwest of McConnell's farm from him in 1839 for $6 per acre ($140/km²). This area later became East Park which today forms part of NorthPark intersection immediately east of downtown Dunn. In 1850 John Downing purchased 479 acres (190 hectares) northeast of McConnell's farm from him for $8 per acre ($240/km²). This area became West Park which today forms part of downtown EastPark intersection immediately west of downtown Dunn across Main Street from Northern Lights Casino & Resort

Dunn, North Carolina is a small town in the Catawba Valley of central North Carolina. The name Dunn comes from the Cherokee word for "hill." The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1836 and incorporated as a village in 1848. It became an incorporated community in 1907. The population of Dunn was 6,594 at the 2000 census. The first white settlement in what is now Dunn occurred on February 4, 1770, when George Washington and his family visited the area on their way to Salisbury from Roanoke Island. They erected a wooden cabin near present day Market Street and built two other cabins along what is now Main Street. In 1784, General James Johnston's army passed through this area while supplies were being unloaded at Wilmingtonport on their march to Camden County. When Johnston's forces reached Dunn, they found that an Indian party had unsuccessfully attacked a store there some time earlier. The colonel commanding the Nathanael Greene's brigade stopped at Dunn for dinner before continuing on their march the next day. In 1836, Scottish-Irish settlers founded the town of Dunnellon on land granted them by Governor William Tryon after he discovered gold over three miles (5 kilometers) south of present-day Dunn. The site of Dunnellon had been occupied by hunter-gatherer groups for several thousand years before this discovery; however, it was not until about 1800 that any permanent settlements were made hereabouts due to develope
