Dunn is a small town in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,632 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson metropolitan area. Dunn is located on the Yadkin River and has a total area of 3 square miles (8 km²). The first settler in Dunn was James Addison who came to Dunn in 1814 with his family. He built a cabin on what is now called "Addison's Hill" and named it after himself. Dunn had its start as a post office on Saturday morning, November 15, 1858. On that date, citizens of neighboring communities met at Dunn's Presbyterian church to form the first government thereabouts. The first justice of the peace was elected by popular vote and he held office until 1871 when John Pritchett took office. In 1861 Confederate soldiers burned downaddison's house which destroyed much of what later became Dunn; however Addison rebuilt and continued to live there for many years afterwards until his death in 1893. In 1865 two men from nearby Greenville were indicted for conspiring to burn downaddison's house but they were acquitted due to lack of evidence; this event helped solidify Dunn’s connection with Greenville culturally as well as politically. cotton gin started production in 1869 which led to increased demand for local goods and services such as transportation, housing, grocery stores etc., these services grew increasingly expensive because railroad transportation became available around this time
