Dunn, North Carolina is a small town located in Chatham County, North Carolina. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dunn was founded by white settlers in 1814 and named for General James Dunn, who served as United States BrigadierGeneral during the American Revolution. In 1876, Dunn became one of ten towns created within Charlotte when that city was reorganized into a metropolitan area. Dunn has had a long history with education. The first school in the town was built in 1814 and serves as the town's oldest building still standing today. The present high school opened in 1957 and is known locally as "The Plantation School" because it once housed many slaves who worked on its plantations during the time period it operated. After emancipation in 1865, most of the enslaved workers were free and moved to other parts of North Carolina or South Carolina until they were eventually allowed to return to their homes in Dunn in 1907. Today, there are several businesses that operate out of the old high school campus including Masterpiece Cakeshop which began operations here in 1978; Drury's Restaurant & Tavern which opened its doors here on May 10th, 1886; and Cunningham’s Newsstand which began business here on November 1st 1959. In addition to its namesake general (James Dunn), other notable residents include Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) and entrepreneur Don Shafer Jr.. In 1988, Mayor Sonny Milne dedicated an outdoor plaza next to Historic First Baptist Church property adjacent to downtown Dunn for local farmers' markets until 1999 when plans were developed for an indoor market this site also served until 2003 when it closed due to budget cuts caused by then-Mayor Phil Bergerman's administration ironically coinciding with then-President George W Bush's decision not renew Transurban bus service through Charlotte along I-85W much like he did throughout much of his years as Governor of North Carolina).
