In 1815, he married Hannah and they started a small grocery store in town. The couple also operated a ferry service between Cornelius Island and Bogue Sound. They were very active in their community, hosting annual dances, social events, and church services. By 1860, Cornelius had Become an incorporated municipality with its own government and school system. In 1865, Cornelius was attacked by Confederate troops under General Pee Dee Bridger. The town was burned down but fortunately no residents were killed or hurt during the attack. After the war ended, many of the colonists returned to their homes in North Carolina but some continued to live inCornelius until it closed its doors in 1978. Today, much of what once stood within walking distance of downtown Cornelius has been replaced by new development including a large shopping mall called "The Cove." However, parts of town that remain largely unchanged from when Cornelius First flourished are still worth visit for their rich history alone!
Cornelius was founded in 1795 by Cornelius and his wife, Anna. They named their town after Thomas Cornelius, a Revolutionary War soldier and congressman from North Carolina. The town site was donated by Cornelius to the state of North Carolina in 1836. In 1865, the town was destroyed by a fire.
