Cornelius was founded in 1792 by John Cornelius and his wife Susannah. The original plantation was located on the banks of the Catawba River. Cornelius became a slaveholding man, adding slaves to his household as he increased his land holdings. He also started a school in 1802 and an orchard in 1812. The town of Cornelius began to develop around this time, with churches and businesses opening up. In 1836, Cornelius donated $10,000 to build a school for African Americans in nearby Raleigh. In 1865, when North Carolina seceded from the United States, Cornelius donated another $10,000 to help finance the Confederate cause. After the war ended, Cornelius focused on his business interests and philanthropy until his death in 1886.
Cornelius is a small town in North Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1821 by George Cornelius and his wife, Hannah. The Cornelius family continued to reside there until 1886, when they moved to Greensboro. In 1924, the Cornelius family donated their home at 815 Main Street to the North Carolina Historical Society for use as a museum. George Cornelius was born in 1793 in Cumberland County, Maryland. He came to North Carolina with his parents in 1821 and started a school near what is now downtown Cornelius. When he died in 1886, his son George Jr. continued the education of his father's students and also built up the business which still thrives today at 901 High Street. The town of Cornelius grew rapidly during the early part of this century because of its location on the Piedmont Railroad line and its proximity to other towns on the Wilmington-New Bern Railway system. By 1920, however, most of what is now downtown had been developed except for a little area north of Market Street known as "The Hill." This area became known as "The Annex" because it housed one or two businesses only before they went out of business or were torn down and replaced by more commercial buildings over time. In 1924, The Cornelia Ladd Foundation donated 815 Main Street to the North Carolina Historical Society for use as a museum dedicated to both George Cornelius Sr.'s life and work throughout North Carolina including those related to industrial development such as NCWDB No 1 Coal mine (later sold). The house has since been used for various purposes such as offices, meetings rooms, exhibits and occasional public events; it is currently open daily from 9am until 5pm inside and outside with free admission from 10am until 4pm during non-museum hours (except holidays).
