Cornelius is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1837 by Cornelius Waddell and his wife Rebecca. It became an incorporated municipality in 1895. The first store on the site of present-day Cornelius was built by Cornelius Waddell and his wife Rebecca in 1837. They opened a store on the corner of Main and Webster Streets. In 1839, they added a second store on the east side of Main Street next to their home. A post office was established in Cornelius in 1840, and served until 1865 when it moved to Greenville. A millinery shop was opened by Mrs. Waddell and her sister Emmeline Giddings in 1846 at the junction of Highways 84 and 9 near what is now downtown Cornelius. This business continued into the 20th century as Oasis Thread Mills Inc., later known as Jiffy Lube & Supply Co.. In 1895, Cornelius became an incorporated municipality with a population of 471 residents; it remained an unincorporated community until 2003 when it became part of Robeson County after its annexation by that county from Greene County. The population increased to 6,812 at the 2010 census due to growth within Robeson County but declined to 5,914 at the 2016 census due to displacement from other counties within Robeson County

Cornelius also played a significant role in the development of the Confederate States of America. Born in 1802 in North Carolina, Cornelius grew up poor and worked his way up through the ranks of society. In 1838, he became a member of the North Carolina General Assembly and later served as its speaker. In 1845, Cornelius was elected to the United States Senate for South Carolina. There he proved himself to be an effective legislator and helped secure passage of important southern bills. During his time in office, Cornelius also developed strong relationships with other leaders in the Confederate States of America. This cooperation allowed him to play a major role in helping ensure that the Confederate states continued to exist even after they seceded from Great Britain on April 12, 1861. After leaving office as senator, Cornelius joined General Robert E Lee's staff at Fortress Monroe on Norfolk Island as chief engineer during the American Civil War.
