Cornelius is a town in Greene County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original name for Cornelius was "Cordova". The first white settler in what is now Cornelius was James Fenton and his family in 1784. He named the place for Isle of Wight, England. The town started as an agricultural community with husbandry being its primary focus until the early 20th century when manufacturing became more important in the area. A small factory that produced shoes began business in 1915 and continued operations until it closed in 1978. In addition to its manufacturing legacy, Cornelius also has a significant history from prior to incorporation as a city which can be traced back to 1872 when two businessmen purchased land east of present-day Cornelius and founded what would become known as Greeneville Township. They named their new municipality after General George Gsell who had defeated Alexander Hamilton at Yorktown Heights during the American Revolution. It wasn't until 1909 that Greeneville Township formalized its annexation into Cornelius; however, Mayor John Hargrave ordered sewage disposal practices within the township so automatically annexed properties were placed within municipal boundaries without any public input or vote by residents which effectively bypassed them altogether and continues this practice today with most annexations taking place without any form of notification or consent from residents (though some have taken legal action). This act caused much anger among many citizens who felt they were not given enough say about how their municipality should be run while simultaneously reducing their ability to bargain collectively on behalf of their constituents through negotiation and consensus building techniques rather than through force or dictatorship. Cornelius was a small town located in Fayette County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,500 at the time of its incorporation in 1838. Cornelius was named after General Cornelius Mecklenburg, a American Revolutionary War officer and delegate to the Peace Convention held in Philadelphia. Cornelius had three churches: one built by the Episcopal Church and dedicated on December 12, 1835; one erected by Presbyterianism on October 30, 1840; and another built by Baptistism on January 17, 1852. The first two churches were destroyed by fire in 1865 and 1868 respectively. The third church was also destroyed but has since been reconstructed as a museum inside the old courthouse complex. There are also several schools located in Cornelius including Oneida Academy (1836), Central School (1841), John Crain High School (1847-1909), Wabash Institute (1851-1927), Moseley School (1855-1912) and Queen's College Preparatory School for Girls (1900). A library was established within the courthouse complex in 1865 and has since been enlarged to include over 100 000 volumes.
