The first settler in Cornelius was Nicholas Carden who arrived in 1796 and built a cabin on what is now Chestnut Street. Carden's son Johnathan also founded Cornelius in 1815. The town name may be derived from an incident that took place there on May 12th, 1831 when five men were traveling through the community on horseback when one of them fell and hit his head on a rock which caused him to lose consciousness and die; he was later found with four wounds on his body. The early settlers were primarily farmers and their primary occupation was farming until about 1840 when shipbuilding became an important part of the economy due to new shipping routes opening up during the Mexican-American War and then during Reconstruction following the end of slavery in America. By 1860, however, Cornelius had shrunk to just 10 people due to factors such as crop failures and increased competition from larger towns downstream. In 1865, for example, Cornelius donated land along the Nash River for use as a public square – one of the earliest examples of this type in North Carolina.
