Cook's survey of the area showed that there was land for sale and he developed a plan to create a new town on his findings. On December 8, 1737, a group of settlers met at nearby Kinston to organize their community into a government under Governor Tryon. This town would be called "Concord." In 1739, General James Johnston arrived with 10,000 men and founded Johnston City on the eastern bank of Raccoon River. The city served as the capital for much of North Carolina during its early years. In 1818, John Cushing purchased 2 million acres (8 km2) from King George III for $1 million dollars which became known as the Cushing Grant. This land formed what is now Interstate 95 and forms one half of Durham County which makes up much of NC's eastern region. After serving as an agricultural center until after World War II when industry took over, Concord experienced rapid growth in recent decades thanks to its location near I-95 and other major highways which has led to increased development around the core downtown area including new housing developments, retail stores and professional officesites. Today there are many cultural attractions within walking or driving distance including two large movie theaters; three restaurants including one that serves fresh local cuisine; two libraries; four parks; three golf courses; six museums; eleven schools (grades K-12); twelve churches/synagogues; twenty-eight businesses employing over 275 people statewide total as well as several dozen amateur artists and musicians whose studios dot downtown streetscape throughout summer months
