The Concord Naval Shipyard was founded in 1892. It became the North Carolina Navy Yard in 1903. The first ship built at the NCNY was the USS Constitution, which launched on November 2, 1892. In 1916, the NCNY purchased the battleship USS Maryland from the United States Shipping Board and named her for Concord’s mayor, John Fenton MD. The NCNY also constructed a destroyer base at Beaufort in 1941 and a submarine base at Currituck in 1942. The UNCNY closed its doors on September 30th, 1987, due to budget cuts. However, it reopened on October 1st as a museum with displays of naval equipment and artifacts from World War II.
