Concord, North Carolina is a small town located in Chatham County, North Carolina. The population was 1,512 at the 2000 census. Concord is home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the First Presbyterian Church. It also has a large market place known as "The Square." The first people to live in Concord were Quakers who arrived in 1735. The town was founded by subscription and was named for General John Moore's estate near Lexington, Kentucky. In 1837, when Johnston's army invaded Virginia, General Robert Ewell recommended that the inhabitants of Concord secede from Virginia and establish their own government within the new United States of America. This proposal was accepted by the people and on June 12th of that year they voted to become an independent republic with a president and Congress unicameral with one chamber each made up of citizens elected for four-year terms instead of hereditary officeholders. On July 4th, 1838 Concord became a state capital under the name "Chatham County". In 1861 during American Civil War (1861-1865), Concord supported Confederate forces against Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant. When Richmond fell on April 9th 1865, all Confederate troops including those from Concord were surrendered without battle or surrendering any civilian property or men. After the war ended in 1865, many families emigrated westward to Nebraska where they began ranching operations along what is now I-25 between Omaha and Rapid City. Some descendants still live in western Nebraska today while others have moved back eastward into eastern North Carolina where they farm tobacco crops and raise pigs on their extensive plantations which are used for pork products throughout much of central/central South Carolina as well as parts of Georgia and Alabama
