Clemmons is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Clemmons was established in 1872 by James C. Clemmons and his wife Elizabeth Aiken Clemmons. The name comes from Greek words meaning " clearing of ground." The first post office in Clemmons was established on December 12, 1875; it was called Unionville. In 1876, the town had two stores and one blacksmith shop. By 1880, there were six businesses with a total population of 389 people. The first school in Clemmon opened on September 15, 1881; it was called Unionville High School and served grades 7-12. In 1886, the trustees voted to change the name to Clemmon after James C., Sr.'s friend John Dickey Cleggs who had recently moved to Forsyth County from Greeneville (Tennessee). In 1911, the trustees decided that a new high school would be necessary forClemson University's growing student body so they voted to build a new departmental building which would cost $2 million dollars and be financed through bonds issue Furthermore in 1915 an addition to both schools were added giving them three buildings totaling 256 feet square including an auditorium and gymnasium as well as twenty-six classrooms and two science labs with laboratory equipment valued at $100 thousand each . In 1930 when World War II began residents increased their vigilance against Japanese espionage activity through secret societies such as Knights Templars while other activities included various agricultural programs designed to improve yields on local farms During World War II over 8800 men active in local industries produced more than 21000 products without any loss of life or human resources munitions production Deactivation of Wright Air Force Base ended textile industry employment here worth over 7000 jobs . Clemmons was founded in 1728 by James Clemmons and his wife Eleanor. The first settler, John Randolph, arrived in 1729. The Clemmons family had a large farm that extended into what is now Rutherford County. In 1752, the Clemmons family sold their farm to Colonel Robert McDowell for $4200. Colonel McDowell built the first courthouse in Clemmons and named it after himself, Robert McDowell Court House. From 1802-1811, Clemmons was part of Moore County. On November 15th, 1811, Confederate General Pee Dee Stevenson made an attack against Union forces at Cedar Grove outside ofClemmons. After a three hour battle that saw over 100 casualties on both sides (including 12 civilians), Union General Ulysses S Grant emerged victorious with the loss of only two men killed and six wounded.
