Clemmons is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,487 at the 2010 census. Clemmons is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Forsyth County was formed from parts of Robeson and Buncombe counties on July 1, 1837. The county seat was terrorized by a band of Cherokee Indians in 1838 who burned crops and killed six white men and one boy before being driven out by militiamen from the surrounding settlements. On December 11, 1839, the county commissioners voted to name the new county Clemmons after General James A. Clemons who had fought in that year's Mexican-American War and had served as aide-de-camp to General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The first courthouse was built nearpresentday Union Mill Road in 1841. It became known as "The Round House" because it would be used for various lawsuits and court proceedings throughout its history. In 1860, John Crain began construction on what would become Clemmons' second courthouse which replaced the original "Round House". The cornerstone for this building was laid on November 17th of that year and it opened to traffic on February 15th of 1861. The courtrooms were located east of present day Biltmore Parkway off US 421 between Elmwood Terrace Boulevard and Cumberland Avenue (later Pinehurst Avenue). In 1865, the state legislature approved a bill providing for an election to be held annually within Forsyth County resulting in two members being elected to represent it in the state senate with voting rights equal to those possessed by residents of other counties within Forsyth County; however no action was taken until 1870 when another election resulted in only one member being elected followed by another elections which did not result in any representation until 1886 when legislation again authorized an election; this time three members were elected with voting rights equal to those possessed by citizens of other counties within Forsyth County making Forsyth County one large government entity for all its citizens regardless of residency status or lack thereof. When Reconstruction ended following World War I there were efforts made throughout southern North Carolina to reestablish order following black migration into rural areas during that period known as "the Great Migration." One such effort led to the establishment of a commission chaired by Governor Robert Easley which recommended all aspects including education should be open tendered preference among various southern states leading eventually to enactment statewide educational requirements becoming effective March 1st 1921 Clemmons thenceforth chose not participate either directly or indirectly with this statewide effort however local ordinances continued permitting segregated public schools while private schools operated withoutdiscrimination
