As the birthplace of two of the most iconic and well-known coffee brands in the United States, Clemmons, North Carolina has a rich coffee history that is often forgotten. In fact, even some locals may be unaware of this significant aspect to the city’s history. First mentioned in writing by Cherokee Indians in 1819, coffee was first grown on plantations in what is now Clemmons. The early Dutch and British settlers also grew coffee here, but it wasn’t until 1795 that a large plantation was established by Nicholas Coates and his brother-in-law, John Cline. The Coateses were very wealthy landowners who imported Ethiopian beans for their coffee production. As demand grew for their product, they began exporting their beans all over the world. The first espresso machine was built inClemmons by Angelo Giovannoni in 1915. It was an Italian design and capable of making up to 12 ounces of espresso per shot. However, despite its impressive capabilities, Giovannoni never got around to marketing his machine himself – he instead delegated marketing duties to his friend Luigi Cappuccio (who later became known as “the Father of Coffee”). By 1938, when Clemmons native Rufus Hargrave founded Blue Bottle Coffee Company (later acquired by Starbucks), Coffee had become quite popular throughout North America. However, it wasn’t until 1862 that Hargrave opened his own café – which would later become known as “the grandfather of cafes” due to its significance within the industry. Throughout much of its history at this point Coffee had been marketed primarily to upscale retail customers; however starting in the late 1970s it started becoming available through more mainstream outlets such as convenience stores and gas stations across North America. This change came about due to growing awareness among consumers about how great quality cupofeam can be enjoyed without breaking the bank. Clemmons was a small town in Pender County, North Carolina until the late 1800s. The first white person to set foot in Clemmons was James Clemmons in 1771. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the Catawba River. In 1802, Clemmons became part of Randolph County when it was created from parts of Pender and Randolph counties. The population of Clemmons peaked at around 2,000 in the 1870s but dropped to about 100 by 1900. By 1910, Clemmons had shrunk to just 40 residents. The decline of farming in the area causedClemmons to lose its status as an important connection between Randolph and Pender Counties. However, it remains a significant community today due to its rich history and cultural significance. According to one account, during the Revolutionary War, James Clemmon helped lead a group known as "The Boys" across the hills into North Carolina from Virginia in order to fight for independence. Afterward he returned home and opened a store in what is now Clemmons with his brother-in-law Andrew McCracken. The store operated until 1827 when it burned down because of carelessness by employees. In 1829, James Clermont married Elizabeth Beattie who lived near Morganton; they would have two children before she died young in 1837 at age 26 after giving birth to their only child, also named Elizabeth Clermont Beattie (1838-1925). After her death, Jane Beattie took over running the business while her husband spent more time away from work looking for new land opportunities outside of North Carolina due to increasing Seminoles threats against both Confederate states following Reconstruction efforts within South Carolina through legislation called "the Johnson bill". He eventually sold most of his holdings includingClemmon's stores located along US 201 northbound then eastbound just south of downtown Morganton – this land would form present day part of Johnston City limits.– JClarmont Land Company (later renamed Brunswick Co.) purchased most if not all acreage which included much present day Hemlock Creek Rd., Old Hwy 27 & access roadmodern development began on creek bank RD leading up stream about 1/4 mile past modern city limits Historic buildings still standing: Store building (1827), Cross Keys Hotel (c1870), Baptist Church (1890) & School House (c1920).!
