Caldwell founded what became known as Caldwell Coffee Company and began shipping beans from his plantation to local stores in Central Carolina. The area that would become Charlotte was first settled by Native Americans in 1765. The first white settlers were granted a land grant from King George III on November 3, 1771. On October 25, 1814, a group of thirteen men and three women founded what would become Charlotte as a small trading post on Gaston Creek within present-day uptown Charlotte. In 1825, General James Kenedy built Fort Caroline on an island in Lake Norman to keep Cherokee Indians from raiding through the area. The town grew quickly because of its proximity to trade routes and its location near UNC School of Law and Duke University. In 1838, construction began on Interstate 95 which connected Raleigh with Jacksonville, Florida; this made Charlotte the second largest city east of Orlando after New York City. In 1840s and 1850s entrepreneurs developedCharlotte into one of America’s leading textile manufacturing centers due to its lack of natural resources (such as coal or oil) and its location between two major railroads: the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) corridor to the north and South Carolina Railway Company (SCP) corridor to the south; these railroad companies allowed for high levels of production without having to go out of state for raw materials or shipping equipment. During this time period also saw significant development at Baptist Medical Center located downtown along Trade Street; it became known as one of America’s largest medical institutions with over 1 million patient visits during its heyday from 1925 until 1975 when it merged with Emory University Hospital). By 1830, most of what is now Charlotte had been developed as a result of its ties to these industries and new arrivals from Scotland began arriving to work in them as well. The city's growth continued through the early years of the 19th century with waves of immigrants coming new technologies such as electricity and transportation that changed life here forever including advances in agriculture which has led to some interesting food products such as Coca Cola being made here today.
