The Charlotte, North Carolina National Guard was formed in 1908 as a result of the state’s passage of the National Defense Act. The guard is made up of both military and civilian members and its mission is to provide security for state and federal buildings, protect the citizens, support local law enforcement, and provide humanitarian assistance. In addition to its military functions, the NCNG also provides personal security for local government officials and other public figures. The history of national guard gift giving in Charlotte goes back to 1908 when the city passed an ordinance establishing the city’s first municipal police department. In response to this new development, Mayor John Leland established a committee chaired by himself to purchase gift items for members of the city’s first municipal guard. The committee selected seven gifts from various sources including clocks, pistols, swords, rifles, shotguns, ammunition and books on policing. These gifts were given as thank-you gifts to officers who had provided safety during early morning hours while on duty. In 1912 City Council passed an ordinance authorizing the establishment of a national guard unit within city limits. This unit would be known as “The Citizens’ Company No 1” until World War II when it was renamed “The Charlotte Guardsmen” in honor of General James Hargrave who served as commanding general during that time period. The Unit played a significant role in World War I where they participated in many battles including Gettysburg where they were awarded numerous medals for their bravery. After World War I ended there was no standing army so soldiers from all over America joined forces with Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee in order to fight against United States troops under President Woodrow Wilson which led tothe war called off at Armistice Day 1918). After World War I there was much debate about whether or not permanent peace should be established throughout Europe so General Ulysses S Grant ordered his troops westward toward Paris where they arrived too late after German forces had already captured the city (known today as Berlin). This event led directly to World War II because without doubt Germany had been stockpiling weapons since before any hostilities began so when Germany invaded Poland on September 1st 1939 USA declared war on Germany immediately (known today as September 11th 2001). The NCNG soon became involved in providing security for civilians inside Nazi concentration camps such as Auschwitz concentration camp which saw more than one thousand POWs killed by Allied bombing raids alone (known today as Memorial Day). As a result of their participation in these atrocities some members of the NCNG received death sentences but eventually received clemency through negotiations between American authorities and Nazi leaders Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels which allowed themto serve out their sentence outside prison while maintaining their civilian rights (known today as parole laws)).

The National Guard has been in Charlotte, North Carolina since 1886. The first units were raised in the city on July 3, 1886 when a detachment of the 1st Regiment N.C.A.F was sent to help quell a civil war-era riot. The first national guard unit to be stationed in Charlotte was the 2nd Regiment N.C.A.F which arrived on October 5, 1886. It was followed by the 1st Regiment N.C.A.F on April 25, 1889 and finally the 4th Regiment N .C .A .F on December 12, 1893. The present active duty battalion of the National Guard is battalion number 914 (Charlotte).
As the birthplace of the United States, Charlotte is an important city with a rich history. The area that now makes up Charlotte was first settled by Native Americans in the late 15th century. In 1814, following the Battle of Pea Ridge, General Andrew Jackson moved his army to Charlotte and renamed it Fort McAllister after General John Cuming, who had stopped the British Army at Pea Ridge. The city was founded on May 25, 1836 by George Washington Harris as a stop on his journey from Wilmington to Raleigh. When NC opened its primary school system in 1842, Charlotte became one of its first schools. Charlotte grew quickly due to its position as a transportation hub and because of its location close to several major roads. By 1860, over 100 businesses were operating in what is now downtown Charlotte. The city's success led to annexation by Henderson County in 1872 and then by Mecklenburg County in 1902. The growth of Charlotte has been largely due to its economy – which has been dominated by manufacturing since at least World War II – as well as its cultural attractions including music events and museums such as the Museum of African American History and Culture (MOAAC). Despite this success story, Charlotte has faced some challenges throughout its history: most notably during the 1960s when crime rates rose rapidly; during Hurricane Floyd in 1999; and more recently with respect to gentrification and displacement brought about by development along Interstate 95 and other corridors through town center areas
