These cultures were succeeded by early Iowan peoples who began settling in present day western Durham County around 1800 A.D.. The first historical reference to Chapel Hill occurs in 1795 when General James Robertson described it as a small town on Pontefract Creek east of Hillsborough River on his march through Chatham County during his military campaign against General William Johnston’s forces. In 1815 Presbyterian minister Drayson Callender founded Christ Episcopal Church on College Street near Unitarian Universalist Row in what would eventually become downtown Chapel Hill. In 1824 Baptist preacher Daniel Boone arrived in town from Kentucky to open up new markets for his religion when he discovered that there was no school for children east of Mobile Bayou where he lived with his familyboat people called Hutto’s Purchaseacee Indians because there was no white settler willing or able to teach them how to read and write. Pastor Callender soon organized some Baptist preachers into a church society which began construction on what would eventually become First Presbyterian Church (now Cathedral United Methodist). Classes began meeting inside chapel built using local bricks brought over by Reverend Boone himself during his visit in 1825 just before his death from fever contracted onboard ship Dandridge when he reached Raleigh harbor – thus marking the beginning of collegiate education here at UNCG! In 1830 Isaac Asimov graduated magna cum laude from UNCG with a degree in mathematics/mathematical physics; however he never practiced law or pursued any other professional interests due to financial reasons related to being poor student loan debtors during this time period! Instead he devoted himself full-time to writing science fiction stories which started appearing regularly in magazines such as Scientific American starting around this time !!! In 1962 Chapel hill passed through an intense tornado outbreak which destroyed much property but did not kill any people or animals; this event helped energize downtown business owners and entrepreneurs like Edwin Armstrong who immediately established himself as one of town’s early leaders !!! Pastor James Roberson established First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church on Elm Street between Market Street and Duke streets (now home to Duke Law School) back in 1865 following slave catchers coming into town searching for runaways looking for new land / homes!! The building still stands today complete with original stained glass windows !! Many famous alumni have attended AME Zion services throughout its history such as Jimmy Dean (former mayor & congressman), Billy Graham (pioneering evangelist), Loretta Lynn (country music singer), Bill Cosby & Richard Pryor (& more) ???
