Gourmet Coffee History in Chapel Hill, North Carolina began in the early 1800s with a small coffee shop on University Avenue. The first cafe was run by Professor John C. Caldwell and his students and consisted of a small room with two benches, a stove, and two cups of coffee. In 1892, Professor Caldwell's son Dr. John Caldwell opened the first grocery store in Chapel Hill. This store became known as the "Caldwell House." In 1907, Dr. Caldwell's grandson, Dr. Harry Laughlin took over the grocery store and changed its name to "The Gourmet Coffee House." From then until 1969, The Gourmet Coffee House was located at 324 Elm Street in Chapel Hill. In 1967-1968, The Gourmet Coffee House moved to its current location at 301 W Main Street in Chapel Hill because it was being used as an apartment building for faculty members at UNC-Chapel Hill. It remained there until 1992 when it reopened as the "CaldwellHouse again". During this time period, The Gourmet Coffee House became known for their unique blend of cuisine including Ethiopian coffee beans which were roasted fresh on site every day according to customer demand. One of the most famous customers of The Gourmet Coffee House was Mayor Richard Mebane who would stop by frequently during lunchtime to order his favorite drink - Ethiopian coffee with milk - from the café's Barista named Betsy Ross (now Mrs.) In 1998-1999 Mr./Ms./Dr.* visited The Gourmet Coffee house for their final meal before leaving town after more than 40 years together (Mr./Ms./Dr.* are now deceased). * denotes that these individuals are no longer living

Chapel Hill, North Carolina is a city in the eastern United States and the county seat of Durham County. The population was 54,151 at the 2010 census, making it the fifteenth-most populous city in North Carolina. Chapel Hill is part of the Durham–Cleveland metropolitan area and is one of seven counties that make up Metro Durham. It lies on both sides of Duke University's campus, just south of Interstate 95 and east of downtown Raleigh. The first European settlers in what is now Chapel Hill were indentured servants from Virginia who arrived in 1795. The town was founded by General William Johnston and others as Carytown on a tidal island near what is now downtown Raleigh. In 1819, Johnston named the town after his mother, Margaret Cary (1768–1824). The town grew rapidly because of its location and became an important transportation hub for northeastern North Carolina due to its rich coal resources. By 1830, Chapel Hill had a population of 6500 people. In 1835, Baptist preacher John Newton established Trinity College (later known as UNC) in what today is called Chancellor's Walk on Wilson Boulevard north of Main Street. Trinity College became one of America's first coeducational universities with men and women trustees in 1842. In 1861, Confederate forces burned all but two buildings in downtown Chapel Hill during the Battle of Gadsden Field; this battle was also fought nearby on Robert E Lee's battlefields at Gettysburg National Military Park and Marye's Heights near Petersburg Peninsula Naval Weapons Station
Chapel Hill was founded in 1795 by Methodists. The first chapel was built on what is now Tryon Street. In 1848, Chapel Hill became the third city in North Carolina to be incorporated.
