By 1835, Chapel Hill had reached its peak with over 100 residents and three stores. However, during Reconstruction Periods (1865-1923), economic decline led to increased crime and social unrest in the area that ultimately led to many homes being destroyed during northeast urban renewal projects such as plan known as "The Great Fire" that swept through Durham County in 1923-24th century Although it has experienced some gentrification over recent years, much of downtown Chapel Hill remains largely unchanged from its rural roots despite growing annexation by nearby neighborhoods such as Hillsborough Village and Matthews Park. Many University students live or work Downtown along side with numerous businesses including several hundred branch libraries across Durham County operated by Duke University Libraries System (DUPLS).
