Cary is a city in North Carolina, United States. The population was 13,883 at the 2010 census. Cary is part of the Raleigh–Durham Combined Statistical Area. It became an incorporated town in 1907 and was named for General George Cary, who fought in the American Revolution. The city's nickname "The City of Oaks" comes from its many oak trees. Cary grew up on a tobacco farm near what is now downtown Cary. When he was eight years old, his father died and he had to leave home to help support his mother and two younger sisters. Cary attended UNC-Chapel Hill and then studied law at Wake Forest University before joining the U.S. Army during World War I as a lieutenant colonel in the Infantry Corps Reserve Officers Training School (CROT). He served with distinction as infantry captain in France and Belgium before being discharged honorably after the war ended on October 16, 1918: one of only nine officers so decorated.[1] Afterward, he returned to Chapel Hill to marry Anna Ewing (1907-1992), daughter of Jethro Ewing Sr., headmaster of North Carolina Central University; they moved to Raleigh in 1922 where they raised their three children together until Anna's death in 1992.[2] After practicing law for several years, Cary joined forces with other business people to found NCBIA Marketing Corporation which became one of the leading marketing firms in America when it was founded in 1951 by him and his partners John Aiken[3][4]and Lester Wolkoff,[5] later renamed NCBIA Ventures Incorporated[6][7]. In 1974 he co-founded Raleigh-based First National Bank with Hildegard Jorgensen (1908-1988).[8] In 1984 he became chairman emeritus of First National Bank while continuing to serve as chairman emeritus of NCBIA Ventures Incorporated from 1984 until his death on November 12th, 2012

As this type of process became more formalized over time, different types of personal items began becoming available for purchase by soldiers including radios (at first just small handheld models), tanks/trucks/amtracks, cigars/cigarettes etcetera. These items were often given as part of larger gifts such as gasoline cards or other forms of appreciation for service (often called “rapid awards”). It should be noted that many commanders found this type of behavior unprofessional and discouraged officers from awarding rapid awards because it created an appearance that they favored one side over another. Cary was founded in 1827 by Scots-Irish settlers as a small farming community on the Yadkin River between Morganton and Rocky Mount. Cary's growth resulted from its location as a crossroads for transportation and trade, its position near the then-nascent railroads, and its easy access to markets and resources. The town became an important center of cotton Farming during the early 20th century; it remains one of America's leading agricultural towns today. In recent decades, however, Cary has experienced rapid suburban development which has impacted its economy and culture; despite this decline, Cary remains an important part of local life and cultural heritage. The origins of Cary date back to 1827 when Scots-Irish settlers arrived in what is now Rutherford County looking for land to farm. They began settlement on what would become known as Green Hill Cemetery where they built small homes around a communal burial ground that served as their home until 1840 when they moved to present day Carytown Square which they named after General James Harnett who had donated land for the town site. The first post office opened in 1829 with David McCullough serving as postmaster; it closed in 1868 due to lack of customers. In 1830 John McGilliffe bought some land east of present day Carytown Square from General Harnett which he named McGillifield Park after himself (a name still used today). By 1840 there were over 100 people living in downtown Carytown square with about 10 stores and 1 school; by 1850 there were 300 residents living within city limits with 30 stores and 2 schools including one that was designed by noted architect Elijah Whitehead (later mayor of Raleigh). While many original Scots-Irish settlers died during the harsh winters that winter or were forced off their property through violence or disease following Scotland's partitioning into Unionist northern Ireland & British loyalist southern Ireland, others decided to stay behind while awaiting new opportunities in what would become America thanks largely to new opportunity offered by President James Ketchum who granted amnesty to all Irish immigrants prior to his inauguration on January 20th, 1789 - an event followed shortly thereafter by American independence from Great Britain Many among these early pioneers found success agriculture but also established themselves manufacturing businesses such as saddlersmiths/smiths,, wagonmakers/cart wheelwrights,, blacksmiths/watchmakers etc.; many also went onto successful political careers locally including future Ulysses S Grant Sr., Wm Pickens 3rd Lord Randolph Churchill et al.. In addition two major events helped fuel future growth within isolated rural communities like Green Hill: Firstwas prohibition legalized throughout America under President Andrew Johnson on April 15th 1913 via Executive Order 6371 making whiskey illegal along with other intoxicating liquors thus stimulating demand for homegrown crops like cotton ginned alcohol coming directly out of farmers' fields instead of being smuggled upriver through hostile Indian territory As business boomed both sides needed more space so much so that Druid Hills located just outside Raleigh began rapidly growing Sheridan Road leading eastward from downtown becoming Mother Road before finally terminating at Ralston Avenue nearpresent day I-285 just southwest Of Raleigh proper) While mother road initially bypassed downtown allowing faster movement essential for truck traffic bringing goods quickly north across I-85 destined for industrial areas like Research Triangle Park furthest east accessible only via dayslong drive west past Durham lettered “I 85 South” moniker associated with this highway even though sections now lying within Wake Forest Drive reachable via several short miles southeast called “I 25 North” . This became most obvious during construction period beginning late 1960’s thru early 1970’s when large quantities OF high level asphalt being laid down parallel I-85W abutting Mother Road caused horrendous backups daily Monday thru Friday lasting anywherefrom 1st quarter till last third Saturdays morning almost invariably disrupting travel plans middle class families alike .
