Cary, North Carolina is the birthplace of the world's first coffee plantation, in 1793. The city has a rich coffee history dating back to before that. The first African American coffee farmer, James Freeman, opened his farm in downtown Cary in 1847. The Freeman family continued to produce quality coffee until World War II. After the war, many families who had grown up with coffee started selling their beans and exporting them around the world. In 1978, Raleigh-based Peet's Coffee acquired Cary's share of the Freeman family business. Today, Peet's Coffee continues to be one of America's leading providers of high-quality coffees and espresso drinks worldwide. The origins of coffee can be traced back to Africa where it was used as a beverage for slaves and then exported to Europe and other parts of Asia. In North Carolina, Dutch traders discovered coffee plants near what is now Cary in 1793 while exploring this region for new sources of sugar cane products. By 1800, some European settlers had started growing coffee trees south of Raleigh on mangroves near present day Cary City Hall Square. Eventually a colony was established by British colonists at Roanoke Island and several miles offshore frompresent day Cary on Oak Island where they grew fruit trees for tea (the process by which caffeine is extracted from teas). Over time various methods were used for harvesting - including pounding or crushing ripe fruit with a mortar and pestle; seeding thin areas with young shoots before watering; or using baskets filled with water to pick fruits off the ground). It wasn't until 1847 when James Freeman set out his own land down State Road 9 just north of downtown Cary that he began producing high-quality African American coffee from his own crop - becoming one of America's earliest black farmers committed to production only from local resources
