Cary, North Carolina is home to the first coffee shop in the United States. The Beans and Cider Shop was founded by George Washington Carver in 1903. The shops were a popular tourist spot for locals and tourists alike until the early 1900s when prohibition made coffee illegal. By 1933, only two coffee shops remained in Cary: The Coffee House and The Bean & Bresset. In 1951, The Coffee House was sold to Mervyn's Coffee and then to Peet's Coffee in 1978. In 1988, Peet's closed its doors after more than 100 years of business operations. Today, Only Gourmet Café continues to serve Colombian-style beans from local farmers across three floors of a historic brick building on High Street in Cary. On November 20th, 2009, Only Gourmet Café reopened as One Stop Coffee with all new equipment from Peet's Coffee that had been donated by collector Donny Duggan of Durham County NC.
