Carrboro is a town in northern Carrboro County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,646 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Fayetteville Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1856 by planter John Hance and his family as a small community on the eastern edge of what is now Carrboro Township. The name comes from the original grant of 2 square miles (5 km2) to John Hance from King George III for his efforts in developing this area. The first post office opened in 1860, and the first store opened in 1865. In 1880, Carrboro became an incorporated village with a one-house government and four trustees who governed its affairs. After being reincorporated as a town in 1903, it annexed much of neighboring Durham County including Chapel Hill and most of Carytown during World War I because it was needed for military production; however, many businesses closed when production shifted to Greensboro due to high tariffs then prevailing between the United States and Great Britain which made goods unavailable imported from Europe. In 1925, Carrboro voters passed an ordinance authorizing the erection of a school building on Main Street which served as their first library until that structure burned down in 1946. The town grew rapidly and by 1828 it had over 1,000 residents. Carrboro experienced its first major economic boom during the late 1800s when trade with Europe increased. In 1892, Carrboro’s first post office was opened and it quickly became one of the busiest mailboxes in state-wide operation. By 1920, Carrboro had reached its peak population size with over 20,000 residents. However, during World War II many members of the local military served their country abroad (including Admiral David Dixon Porter), which led to significant decreases in population throughout 1945-1946; however, this trend reversed somewhat after cessation of hostilities). In 1951, Carrboro voters elected Drury Nolin as mayor; he would later become governor of North Carolina under Republican rule from 1979-1989. During his time as mayor (1951-1959), he spearheaded several city growth initiatives includingthe construction of new parks and libraries—marks that continue to be memorialized today by Carrboro citizens who enjoy formal walks through these institutions every day during fall season.).
