Carrboro is a town in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. Carrboro was founded in 1795 by Captain John Cooke and his wife Elizabeth Young Cooke. The town was named for General George Washington's home on Yorktown Boulevard in Virginia. In 1847, Carrboro became the county seat of Wake County and has since been one of its most important cities. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Carrboro in 1795 during the French and Indian War when captain John Cooke and his wife Elizabeth Young Cooke built a house on land that they owned along Yorktown Boulevard near present-day Chapel Hill Road. The couple's six children were born here: Sarah (1796-1868), John (1799-1865), James (1800-1865), Isabella (1802-1869), William (1805-1875) and Anna Maria ( 1807-1898).Captain Cooke's brother Samuel had also moved to Carrboro from England two years earlier with his family and started a small grocery store called "Samuel Cooke & Company" which sold groceries, ammunition, clothing, etc., until it burned down in 1827. In 1840 General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Fort Johnston on behalf of Confederate forces led by General Robert E Lee; more than twenty people died as a result of the attack including Captain John Cooke who lost an arm fighting for the Confederacy. Over time many other families followed Captain Cooke's lead making Carrboro one of the largest slave markets within North Carolina before emancipation happened early in this century. John Ransom played football for UNC at quarterback from 1922 to 1924 In 1865 when Union troops marched into town after defeating Confederate forces at Battle of Norwood Bridge residents welcomed them with open arms; however soon afterwards anti slavery riots took place between abolitionists and local white supremacists that left several streets gutted or destroyed including Main Street where stores such as Judge Witherspoon’s still stand today testament to how quickly things changed following Union victory over Confederate forces nightmarishly called “the battle at Norwood” some say because no African Americans were killed although Indians did participate
