He built a small cabin on what is now Middle Avenue and named it Burlington after himself, so that others could find him if they needed help finding their way around or looking for goods. The first store in town opened on July 1, 1800, just two months after Moore's arrival. Over time, other settlers arrived and more stores were started up throughout downtown Burlington - until finally there were six businesses operating within two blocks of each other in 1802! This success led to new development all around downtown: an opera house was built next door to First Presbyterian Church; a cotton gin was erected near State Street; homes were being built along Elm Street; and streets were being widened and renamed to make it easier for people to get where they wanted to go! By 1830, Burlington had become one of the most populous towns in North Carolina - with over 60 businesses! During the 19th century, Burlington experienced significant growth thanks to its prominent place as a railroad center and its role as a commercial hub for much of southcentral North Carolina. In 1882, when Raleigh annexing Wake County made Burlington the county seat – becoming one of only three cities located outside Raleigh – rapid growth continued throughout much of central Raleigh until World War II stopped this progress entirely. The Burlington Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listing for 77 buildings and sites in Burlington. The first permanent settler in what is now Burlington was James Aiken who arrived in 1768. He named the town after his home town of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Aiken's farmstead still stands on Second Street just east of High Street today. The original Burritt House (now part of the University of North Carolina system) stood on Third Street and was destroyed by fire in 1845 but has been replaced by several other buildings including the State Capitol building which stands today on Fourth Street between High and Low Streets. The first post office opened in 1789 and continued operation until 1861; it was renamed Burlington after George Washington's inauguration as President of the United States that year. During the American Civil War there were many skirmishes around Burlington including three engagements where Union troops burned down homes to prevent Confederate forces from using them as shelter or ammunition caches: Battle of Cedar Creek (1862), Battle of Durham Heights (1865), and Siege of Petersburg (1865). After 1865 Burlington became an agricultural center with rice being grown extensively before becoming an industrial center with manufacturing beginning around 1925 when mills started production outfitting automobiles with metal bodywork made from aluminum! In 1930 Burlington acquired its first electric headlights! In 1965, Mayor James Ivey announced plans to demolish all but two structures within downtown core due to concerns about air quality created by industries located near city limits such as steel mills and paper plants that used large quantities of coal dusts generated during manufacturing processes! This led to protests against demolition which eventually evolved into a citizens' movement called "Save Our History!" Later that year Mayor Ivey announced he would not be following through with plans to demolish any structures even though Inspectors found emissions levels inside some demolished buildings above state safe limits! This lead to another protest campaign called "WeAreBurlington" which successfully managed to push for new policies limiting emissions from various businesses within city boundaries while also maintaining public access to historical archives and museums!
