The Burlington, North Carolina Coast Guard Station has been a part of the community since 1912. The station was located on Tyndall Point in Shell Harbor and was manned by the United States Coast Guard from 1912 to 1975. In 1975, the station was transferred to the City of Burlington as part of a fifteen-year agreement between the city and the Coast Guard. The current coast guard station is located at 2281 First Street in Burlington. The first coast guard station in Burlington was built on Tyndall Point in 1912 by United States Coast Guard personnel under command of Rear Admiral John Fenton. The Tyndall Point Station served as an emergency landing spot for troops during World War I and II. During these wars, the Coast Guard usedTyndall Point Station to store supplies and evacuate people who were threatened with exposure or death from along our coastline. In 1975, when Burlington became a city, it agreed to transfer ownership of its coastal defense assets includingthe Tyndall Point Station to the city under a 15-year agreement that saw significant changes take place within our community over that time period. Today, 2281 First Street serves as headquarters for all aspects of municipal law enforcement along our scenic waterfront streetside corridor; while also providing access to municipally owned dockyards adjacent to First Street which serve as berth areas for local boats and other watercraft used by locals and visitors alike during their summertime excursions down First Street's length! The United States Coast Guard was organized on August 29th, 1790. The first Coast Guard cutter was built in 1807 and the first air station was built in 1912. The Coast Guard became an independent service on May 15th, 1915. On November 15th, 1917, the first Coast Guard Station at New York City was opened. The first patrol boat was built in 1929 and the first helicopter arrived in 1975. The Coast Guard has increased its size by 30% since 1997 and now employs over 14,000 people. In fiscal year 2017 (the most recent year for which figures are available), the Coast Guard’s budget totaled $16 billion dollars. This number is expected to grow to $21 billion by 2027. In 1992, a new Command Center/Hospital was dedicated at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York City after years of planning by then-Director Adm Rickover. It is one of only two command centers/hospitals in the United States that is not operated by either state or local governments (the other being located at Fort Benning Army Base).
