Burlington is one of the most developed areas in Buncombe County. It consists of a mix of single-family homes and condos as well as a few multi-unit buildings. The downtown area is home to several large businesses including Burlington Steelworkers Local 5891, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company's locomotive shop and passenger car shop. The city of Burlington was founded on May 6, 1846 by five men from Raleigh: Jno. Boddice (founder), Wm. Hogg (manager), John Forrester (councilman), Amos Butler (builder) and Isaac Newton (banker). The name "Burlington" was first given to a small stream that drained into the Ashley River near present-day Gastonia. On February 2, 1865, the town acquired land from Yadkin County for $5 per acre ($27 million today). This land had been used for agricultural purposes since colonial times and consisted mostly of low hills with scattered woods and some small plantations. In 1865 Burlington became the county seat for Buncombe County which also included Asheville and Morganton. On December 1st 1906 residents of Burlington adopted a resolution requesting annexation by Wake County because they felt that Wake had not done enough to help their municipality develop economically during the late 1800s when it was largely composed of rural landowners who cultivated tobacco fields or raised hogs while telephone service did not exist or was very slow to arrive in the area . due to lack of financial resources at that time.
