The First Battalion, Carolina Regiment was sent to Burlington on December 12, 1861. The regiment arrived at the state capital on December 16 and was assigned to duty with the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of Northern Virginia. On January 3, 1862, the battalion was re-designated as the 1st Battalion (North Carolina) Confederate Infantry Regiment and levied into service under command of Brigadier General Jubal Early. On January 26th, 1862, the battalion took part in a raid on White Oak Swamp. On February 21st, 1862, the regiment participated in a march from Yorktown Heights to Suffolk Court House. On March 9th they were ordered to Fredericksburg where they relieved Mahone's cavalry regiment in line of battle for three days prior to withdrawing back to Yorktown Heights. On April 15th Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his brigade forward against Union General James Longstreet's forces at Mechanicsville Junction which resulted in a Union victory. The brigade then withdrew southward towards Lynchburg before being attached once again to Jeb Stuart's Cavalry Corps on May 4th and 5th respectively. In late summer of 1862 veteran officers and men from both battalions served as cadets at Furman University where they learned artillery tactics and fieldcraft while also taking courses in law enforcement and political science

Burlington is a city in North Carolina, United States. The population was 30,603 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in the state and the largest within Wake County, which includes Raleigh and Chapel Hill. Burlington was founded by English colonists in 1795 as a small town on Catawba River. The city became an important manufacturing center during the late 19th century with its production of products such as textiles, shoes, bicycles, shipbuilding and munitions. In 1892, Burlington acquired its present-day site on South Tryon Street between High Street and Morehead Avenue. In 1945 it became home to U.S. Air Force Base Wright-Patterson which closed in 1996 after serving as one of America's largest military bases ever while also housing many factories that produced goods for NATO forces around the world. Despite this history, Burlington has seen steady growth over recent decades with suburban development encroaching on its downtown core; however, rapid gentrification has since reversed this trend and now most of Burlington's commercial districts are located outside of the original downtown area due to rising real estate prices inside of it today
